Position: Mental Health Screener (FT‑Night) – Somerville, NJ
Pay Range: $28.64 – $35.57 per hour (based on New Jersey location)
Job Overview RWJBarnabas Health is looking to add a Mental Health Screener in Somerville, NJ. The Mental Health Screener provides care in the acute care setting within the scope of practice defined by the Screening Law and other regulatory standards. The role ensures safety by maintaining an awareness of personal knowledge and experience, advancing knowledge through communication with resource persons/programs, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to individualize patient care plans. Responsibilities also include supervising and directing delegation of tasks to support personnel and consistently setting and evaluating priorities.
Pay Transparency The above reflects the anticipated hourly wage range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey.
The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on factors such as educational background, skills, and professional experience.
Qualifications Required:
BA/BS degree in a related field, plus 3 years of prior experience in a psychiatric setting, including 1 year in a crisis setting
OR enrolled in a Master's program with 2 years of prior experience in a psychiatric setting, including 1 year in a crisis setting
Must possess and maintain a valid NJ state driver’s license
BLS certification through American Heart Association
Preferred:
Eligible to obtain a Temporary Screening Certification Number upon hire and a permanent number within 1 year
Certifications and Licenses Required
Valid NJ State Driver’s License
BLS Certification
Eligible to obtain a permanent Screening Certification Number within 1 year of hire
Scheduling Requirements
Night Shift, 40 hours/week
Full‑Time Schedule
Essential Functions
Answer phones (hotline, business line) professionally and promptly
Communicate clinical information effectively with the Screening psychiatrist/Child psychiatrist
Communicate effectively with other members of the health care team (internal and external)
Communicate effectively with the Screening RN in Charge of Shift regarding the patient’s treatment plan and disposition
Conduct a thorough ongoing assessment according to departmental guidelines
Provide patient care in a timely manner
Demonstrate professional behavior according to hospital codes in the Employee Handbook
Describe the screening process and update progress of evaluations/interventions to patient/family
Document all applicable assessments and interventions in the patient’s electronic medical record
Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports in a timely manner (prior to end of shift)
Complete screening documents in accordance with Screening Law and guidelines from DMHS Screener Certification training
