CTE Family Consumer Science - Foods and Nutrition Teacher (Valid NC Teaching License Required) Join Asheville City Schools as a Family Consumer Science – Foods and Nutrition Teacher. Position Summary The FACS teacher develops lesson plans and instructs students on family and consumer science content, delivering progressions aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Career Clusters Framework. Responsibilities include:

Developing and delivering engaging, standards‑based instruction across Food and Nutrition, and on demand Food & Nutrition, Child Development, and Interior Design pathways.

Integrating real‑world applications, project‑based learning and 21st‑century skills into the curriculum.

Preparing students for CTE participation (e.g., FCCLA) and encouraging leadership and competition opportunities.

Managing a safe, inclusive, and organized classroom and lab environment for hands‑on learning.

Using varied instructional strategies, assessment tools, and technologies to meet diverse learning needs and monitor student progress.

Collaborating with colleagues, families, community partners, and CTE advisory boards to enhance student learning and career readiness.

Maintaining accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and other required documentation.

Participating in ongoing professional development, CTE department meetings, and school improvement initiatives.

Following all federal, state, and district policies, including CTE reporting and compliance regulations.

Supervising students in classroom and laboratory settings, ensuring safety and proper use of equipment and supplies.

Accounting for and maintaining inventory for classroom, school, and district property.

Advising the CTE Director and school administration of needed repairs, replacements, or unsafe conditions.

Communicating with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student educational needs and progress.

Compiling information from various CTE pathway sources and disseminating it through meetings, conferences, professional development, presentations, etc. to recruit employers, stakeholders, mentors, and teachers.

Participating in required meetings with local business partners.

Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CTE Director and carrying out non‑instructional duties as needed.

Following a professional development plan and demonstrating evidence of growth.

Qualifications Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Science® (710 or 716). A completed state‑approved teacher preparation program in FACS, a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, and a Praxis exam in Family and Consumer Science (5122) are required. Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Physical & Cognitive Requirements Physical: Able to sit, stand, walk, drive a car, and lift boxes up to 10 pounds (Light Work).

Cognitive and communicative: Ability to compare data, give instructions, read simple forms, prepare timesheets, apply common sense in instructions, communicate effectively in Standard English, perform basic math, discriminate colors, coordinate hand-and-eye movements, handle maintenance equipment, and manage interpersonal interactions.
