Provides a range of professional dental hygiene services for patients of the School of Dentistry with emphasis on patient education and preventive dental care.
Minimum Qualifications Education, Certification and/or Licensure
WV Board of Dental Examiners Licensure as a dental hygienist is required.
Current BLS Certification required.
Preferred Qualifications Education, Certification and/or Licensure
Bachelor's degree preferred.

Provides professional dental hygiene services to patients of the WVU School of Dentistry as deemed appropriate and defined by the WVU Board of Dental Examiners' Scope of Dental Hygiene Practice.
Records medical and dental histories.
Provides patients with information regarding informed consent; obtains informed consent from patients.
Reviews patient records for thoroughness and appropriateness, especially regarding any medical condition that could complicate a procedure.
Inspects the oral cavity and reports symptoms/problems to dentist.
Captures a variety of dental images, including radiographs and photographs.
Performs supra-gingival and subgingival scaling of teeth.
Polishes coronal and/or exposed surfaces of teeth.
Follow the School's established clinical policies and procedures.
Provides dental health education and pre and post treatment and/or home care instructions.
Provides nutritional counseling.
Examines and records periodontal findings.
Performs clinical examinations and diagnostic tests of teeth and surrounding tissues and records findings for interpretation by a dentist.
Places subgingival dressings, medicaments, fibers, chips, etc.
Performs debridement and/or root services.
Scales excessive cement from the surfaces of teeth and restorations.
Finishes and polishes restorations with a slow speed.
Applies bleaching and anesthetic agents.
Administers infiltration and block anesthesia after successful completion of a board-approved course.
Reviews and manages patient care schedules to ensure that productivity goals are met.
Physical Requirements
High degree of manual dexterity and motor skills.
Work requires prolonged sitting and repetitive motion of arms and hands.
Working Environment
Clinical environment.
Exposure to hazardous materials, radiations, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
