Position Purpose:

The Supervisor reports to the Custodial Services Manager and has overall responsibility for planning, scheduling, implementing, and reporting on the daily and special duties of the custodial department. The role supervises full‑time employees and subcontractors, maintains high standards of cleanliness across more than 1 million square feet, and provides training and leadership for approximately 30 FTE custodial staff.

Key Responsibilities (Percentage of Time) 20 % – Scheduling, Planning & Quality Assurance

Plan, prioritize, and assign all custodial work, provide estimates, and report as required.

Manage work orders, inspects in‑progress and completed work for safety, quality, and productivity.

Implement quality control initiatives, support Smart Inspect software, enforce task sheet use.

Develop specifications for routine work and special projects; solicit, review bids and award work to achieve best value.

Prepare cost estimates, schedules, and assist with annual budgeting.

15 % – Resource Management & Evaluation

Approve and monitor personnel, tools, equipment, vehicles, and supplies.

Evaluate materials and products for performance and cost effectiveness.

Requisition and procure materials to achieve best value.

30 % – Personnel Management

Establish work and staff schedules, manage staff time and payroll submissions.

Participate in hiring, performance management, promotions, and transfers.

Coordinate work needs with FO&M administrators and other departments.

Provide training and hold shop meetings.

5 % – Working Conditions

Bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in cramped positions.

Lifting, carrying, and holding objects up to 50 lb.

Climbing stairs in buildings 4–5 levels high.

Work indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in noisy, dirty, or smoky areas.

Exposure to electric shock, burns, cuts, and chemical fumes.

Wearing protective clothing such as aprons, gloves, and goggles or masks.

Required Qualifications

Associate’s degree in general management, facilities, industrial management, or related technical field.

5 + years of custodial or housekeeping experience.

3 + years of supervisory experience over 5 employees.

Experience in educational, medical, or large residential facilities (>100,000 sqft).

Valid driver’s license and compliance with Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of custodial services for large facilities, including hard floor care, carpet and upholstery cleaning, solid waste, and recycling.

Experience estimating, scheduling, and managing services provided by individuals or small groups; supervising 10 + FTE.

Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) or Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH); IEHA preferred.

Strong communication skills with direct reports, staff, students, faculty, and subcontractors.

Commitment to recycling, sustainability, and a diverse working environment.

Computer literacy (Excel, Word, web browsing). Familiarity with electronic payroll and work order systems.
