Public Health Nurse
Galveston County Health District is seeking a knowledgeable and compassionate Public Health Nurse to join our Community Health Services team. In this role, you will provide essential public health nursing services that support, protect, and promote the health of individuals and populations across Galveston County.

What You’ll Do:
Perform public health nursing activities in accordance with the DSHS Preventive Health Services Block Grant, including participation in community health initiatives, GCHD flu campaigns, Back-to-School Immunization campaigns, and emergency response efforts (e.g., COVID-related vaccination, testing, and treatment)
Adhere to grant requirements that emphasize mobilizing community partnerships to identify and address public health concerns
Perform nursing duties that aid in the protection and promotion of public health
Perform immunizations at designated clinics
Perform direct observed therapy and provide clinical care for tuberculosis patients
Conduct home visits, including assessments for elevated blood lead levels
Assist with Tuberculosis, STI Express Clinic, and Immunization Program services
Perform phlebotomy (blood draws), sputum collections, and urine specimen collection as required
Maintain monthly service logs and gather statistical data for outreach and accountability reporting
Provide education, orientation, and supervision to staff nurses, students, volunteers, and auxiliary workers regarding public health practices
Actively promote monthly health and wellness activities for GCHD staff
Follow Standing Delegation Orders (SDOs) issued by a licensed physician or County Health Authority in accordance with Texas Medical Board and Board of Nursing requirements
Comply with GCHD Infection Control policies and ensure proper disposal of biohazard waste
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
What We’re Looking For:
Graduation from an accredited nursing program
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing
Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Registered Nurse
Experience in a local health department and/or population-based public health activities preferred
Ability to perform clinical nursing assessments and routine nursing procedures
Strong clinical judgment and patient assessment skills
Ability to follow Standing Delegation Orders (SDOs)
Public speaking and presentation experience
Current CPR certification
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong customer service orientation
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
Valid Texas driver’s license
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
Must comply with GCHD Immunization Policy and ICs training requirements
Must pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening
