Sr Estimator – Highway/Heavy Civil/Structures
Sundt Construction invites applications for the Sr Estimator – Highway/Heavy Civil/Structures role. The Senior Estimator will operate with minimal oversight on preconstruction teams and provide key quantification and cost control support for transit, civil infrastructure, and highway projects.
Job Summary The Senior Estimator operates with minimal oversight on preconstruction teams, frequently serving as the principal point of contact with the design team and the owner. Senior estimators lead all types of project delivery methods and demonstrate competence in basic and advanced estimating functions including earthwork, paving, underground utilities, and structures.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced level HCSS knowledge of estimate entry and quote system tools.
Estimate all scopes related to their discipline area of expertise.
Perform detailed quantity take‑offs on bid items and materials to develop all‑inclusive cost estimates.
Estimate unit costs by analyzing crew composition, production rates, and equipment selection.
Participate in detailed reviews, providing thorough explanation of estimates.
Utilize relevant cost‑history databases to verify production rates.
Prepare supplier bid packages to ensure self‑performed work has competitive material quotes.
Coordinate junior estimators and interns with take‑off and vendor solicitation processes.
Assist in obtaining firm quotes for material suppliers, equipment and subcontractors.
Discipline Experience (Examples)
Mass earthwork and grading
Geotechnical review – dewatering, blasting, and ripping
Earthwork flow, mass haul diagrams, project phasing
Scraper, dozer, truck, loader, and excavator production
Aggregates, PCCP paving, asphalt paving
Identification of suitable quarries and pits
Production of aggregates, asphalt, and concrete by various methods
Understanding of incentives, penalties, and PWLs
Underground utilities – trench protection and shoring
Excavator methods and equipment selection
Mechanical assemblies such as valves and fire hydrants
Backfill methods and materials pricing
Bridges and structures – falsework, formwork systems, post‑tensioning, precast yards, foundations
Crane selection, erection of precast elements, cast‑in‑place techniques
Minimum Job Requirements
Proficient use of all Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Preferably LEED accreditation and DBIA certification or willingness to obtain.
Four‑year engineering degree or equivalent technical training/experience.
Ten or more years of estimating experience.
Proven history executing projects as prime point of contact with minimal oversight.
Experience in one or more key market sectors identified by the business unit.
Physical Requirements
Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
Mobility to reach above shoulder heights and below waist on a frequent basis.
Occasional stooping, kneeling, or bending.
Use electronic devices on a limited basis for communication.
Compliance with all safety standards.
Occasional stair or ladder climbing.
Frequent handling, lifting, carrying, or gripping of objects.
Interaction with people during shift.
Occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling.
Ability to sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift.
