Summary of Job Duties:

Supervised by Milk Lab Manager, the Milk Lab Technician is responsible for all essential tasks for handling and preparing infant feedings in the NICU Milk Lab. NICU infant feeding are prepared in accordance with Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) guidelines and department policies. The individuals fulfilling this role are responsible for maintaining the aseptic environment of the NICU Milk Lab. The Milk Lab Technician is responsible for stocking the Milk Lab, as well as maintaining records of inventory, cleaning schedules, and equipment maintenance. Individuals fulfilling this role should be food handler certified and receive continuing education and training to support milk-handling techniques. Individuals in this role report to the Milk Lab Manager. State and federal laws and UAMS policy govern this position.

Qualifications Required:

High School Diploma

1 year of experience in healthcare or food service.

Preferred:

Formula/Human Milk Technician Certificate

2 years of Hospital or Healthcare-related or 3 years Food Service.

Responsibilities

Milk Lab Technicians are responsible for all essential tasks related to handling and preparing infant feedings processed through the NICU Milk Lab.

The individuals fulfilling this role are primarily responsible for maintaining the aseptic environment of the NICU Milk Lab to ensure safe handling (collection, storage, and preparation) of expressed breast milk (EBM), pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM), and formula.

The Milk Lab Technician prepares infant feedings of human milk and formula daily, according to recipes calculated from physician orders the Milk Lab Manager/Assistant Manager/Dietitian.

The Milk Lab Technician will participate in the training of new Milk Lab staff members.

The Milk Lab Technician is responsible for following the policies of the UAMS NICU Milk Lab in accordance with HMBANA Guidelines and performing duties to ensure the Milk Lab operates in the safest manner.

Maintenance and Inventory

Individuals in this role are responsible for ensuring equipment is in working order and that adequate supplies are available to complete the necessary daily tasks in the Milk Lab.

This role is responsible for cleaning all areas, storage and distribution zones, ensuring lab equipment is in working order, and maintaining operational inventory.

Compliance

Individuals in this role prepare human milk and fortified formula infant feedings in accordance with guidelines set forth by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), and UAMS policies.

Individuals in this role are responsible for maintaining records regarding cleaning, equipment maintenance, inventory, and distribution.

Ancillary Support

Individuals in this role are responsible for preparing and distributing copies of the daily MOM Log to the Lactation Department and NICU Dietitians.

This role is responsible for ensuring correct labeling of refrigerator bins, freezer drawers, and storage containers. This role is responsible for maintaining the current patient label binder organized by correct room/bed assignment daily.

May perform other duties as assigned.
