Summary The Medical Instrument Technician - under the supervision of the Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) under the Director - Birmingham Sleep Disorders Center - displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all sleep diagnostic and treatment procedures and other related procedures in accordance with the guidelines and protocols established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine - BVAMC Sleep Disorders Center and procedures of the Birmingham VA Hospital.
Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation
Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS‑4 and GS‑5 levels

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (KSAs)
Advanced knowledge of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders
Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form
Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures) and ability to take appropriate action
Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians
Preferred Experience
Minimum of 1 year experience in polysomnography; 3 years highly desirable
RPSGT (Registration by Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists) highly desirable
Home sleep study experience highly desirable; reliable, self‑motivated, courteous, team player, able to work independently and with others professionally

Duties
Scan patient health records of common and complicated medical conditions pertinent to sleep testing procedures
Explain procedure to patients to ensure comfort for optimal recording
Anticipate and correct patient discomfort, mechanical and electrical interface artifacts
Scan/examine the recording environment to detect and eliminate sources of artifacts
Recognize patient movements and diagnostic findings; make changes in recording techniques and parameters to optimize display
Perform patient physical assessments related to sleep disorders, including mask fittings and adjustments
Conduct patient polysomnography setups, calibration, and acquisition performance verification; perform pre‑ and post‑test calibrations
Monitor multiple physiological data throughout specific tests
Troubleshoot polysomnographic recording equipment; identify and treat sleep‑related breathing disorders
Integrate polysomnographic data into patient care, coordinating with other functional areas (CPAP Clinic, Sleep Clinics)
Provide patient instructions and education; recognize medical intervention needs if patient safety is at risk
Remove, and sterilize electrodes and sensors at completion of study as needed
Order necessary supplies and equipment for the Sleep Lab
Perform timely sleep staging according to latest professional standards and VA Sleep Lab protocols; generate reports for physician interpretations; assist physicians and trainees in maintaining quality standards of sleep reports
Evaluate validity of data relative to the testing system and accepted procedures; correlate quantitative data with patient data to verify results
Perform additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; recognize abnormal results requiring immediate physician attention and report directly
Make appropriate phone calls and use fax to obtain data from non‑VA sources; document interaction and make data available to providers and medical records department
Extensive knowledge of Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy and mask fitting; perform desensitization assessments, set/download/troubleshoot and adjust PAP devices; prepare and complete documentation for reports
Educate patients on sleep disorders and sleep disorder treatments (including PAP devices)
Work directly with Prosthetics to procure necessary PAP equipment and parts
Responsible for content implementation, education, and revision of all educational material for diagnosing and treating veterans with sleep disorders
Responsible for in‑person and video telehealth sleep and CPAP education and follow‑up
Responsible for updating and maintaining accurate and current data in the CPAP software databases (e.g., Care Orchestrator, Air View)
Interpret doctor’s orders prior to setting up PAP equipment and determine equipment will allow specified pressure ranges
Reliable, self‑motivated, able to anticipate problems, prepare, suggest procedural changes, or recommend alternative courses of action; performs other duties as assigned by management
Transition from initial on‑the‑job training and competence completion at Birmingham VA Medical Center to Huntsville, AL after 3‑4 months
Work schedule: 7:30 am‑4:00 pm, Monday‑Friday (subject to change); not a virtual position
