Summary
This position is located in Medical Service - Boise VA Medical Center - Boise - ID. This position provides support to Medical Service - Behavioral Health Service.
Qualifications Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2 - section D - paragraph 5a - this part Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation
however - it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge - skills - and abilities Grade Determinations: GS-10 Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level - which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled - and must fully meet the KSAs at that level
This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex polysomnography technician services
Demonstrated Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities: In addition - the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1
Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques

Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program

Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations

Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls - contracts - and equipment expenditures) - forecast resource and equipment needs - and administer the allocated budget

Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed

Certification: Registration by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level

Duties
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include but are not limited to the following: The incumbent will serve as a Medical Instrument Technologist Supervisor for the technicians of the Sleep Laboratory - Home Sleep Study Coordinator - Overnight oximetry coordinator - CPAP coordinators - as well as the CPAP Compliance coordinator
Quarterly check of Quality Assurance and reports and Inter-Scorer Reliability reports
Keeps the remote scoring software and gateways working properly
Ensures Policies and Procedures are current and makes updates as needed
Keeps up with AASM guidelines to include compliance with AASM Reference Manual and AASM Practice Parameters
Discusses AASM new recommendations with Medical Director before implementing changes
Makes the schedule for all the staff
Makes sure all equipment is working properly
Helps with training the night and day techs with CPRS usage when needed
Responsible for the techs entering notes into CPRS
Assists the Home Sleep Testing coordinator and sleep techs when needed
Keeps things in order for The Joint Commission surveys
Keeps the Sleep Center and HST program up to par for accreditation with AASM
Keeps abreast of all the DME equipment and supplies and makes necessary phone calls when needed to keep supplies on hand
Fills in the Product Request forms for the Commodities Committee when new items are needed
Keeps the Radiometer Transcutaneous equipment calibrated and working
Keeps the etCO2 equipment working and communicating with the data-collection equipment
Functioning and makes reports when needed
Incumbent works directly with multiple departments including Bio-medical engineering - Logistics and Materials Management - and Information Technology - as well as vendor tech support teams to keep all sleep lab equipment - CPAP/DME - HST and Neurodiagnostic functioning properly
Regularly reviews new equipment and analyzes performance of current equipment to make equipment recommendations for the departments
Supervisor makes staff work assignments - completes performance reviews - and assures staff competency in clinical procedures
Supervisor works with the Chief of Pulmonary to assure sleep lab meets all Joint Commission standards
Reviews workload and forecasts future demand to develop budget recommendations
Collaborates with division's fiscal officer to address sleep lab budgetary needs
Works within budget to use contracts and fee basis staff optimally to maintain access to sleep studies and outpatient appointments
Works with the HST program to assure staff competency in HST and CPAP setups and follow ups
Incumbent supervises staff MIT & Respiratory Therapist day and night techs
Works with staff to assure that sleep technologists follow proper procedures in setting up each patient so the collected data will be clean - easy to stage and score - and close to artifact free
Performs triage - schedules according to patient priorities and per the needs of the centerAssures that all scoring techs and the Medical Director participate monthly with the inter-scorer reliability - to assure consistent and accurate reports are generated support the sleep physician to be able to properly treat the patient
Works with the scoring techs as needed to improve accuracy
Organizes and conducts All-Staff sleep/DME monthly meetings
Assists Medical Director in organizing Medical Director's sleep meeting
