Overview
Plant Operator position in Lansing, MI – Empire – Filling industrial. The Plant Operator is responsible for safely operating equipment for the handling and production of packaged gas cylinders, both for high pressure and liquefied gases. We are looking for you! The Plant Operator operates in a role that supports safe handling of hazardous materials and cylinder gases in compliance with government and Airgas standards.
Responsibilities
Loads and unloads gas cylinders and/or other products onto and off of route trucks and trailers, moving cylinders with proper carts.
Sorts empty cylinders by type.
Rolls cylinders and operates a forklift for movement of cylinders on pallets.
Understands hazards of various gases; reads cylinder labels and color-coding; accurately labels cylinders.
Handles high-pressure, medical and liquid cylinders; prepares high-pressure cylinders and cryogenic vessels for filling; attaches to manifold and evacuates cylinders to eliminate contaminants.
Performs basic cylinder maintenance (painting, labeling, workspace cleaning).
Inspects cylinders prior to filling in accordance with government, Airgas, and distributor standards; conducts safety checks (odor tests, caps and valves); fills cylinders by pressure and weight per regulations and standards.
Checks cylinder quantities, styles, and product; assists with inventory.
Manages paperwork to DOT, FDA, OSHA, and Airgas standards; completes quality control sheets as required.
Complies with all government and company standards relating to the safe handling of hazardous materials/cylinder gases.

Required Education
HS Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Required Length & Type of Experience
Minimum of one year of prior experience in a manufacturing operation; filling or loading experience preferred.
Strong background in gas, welding and safety supply industry or chemical industry preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to read and comprehend material safety data sheets.
Ability to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to perform basic math (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.
Ability to safely operate a forklift.
