This apprenticeship program will begin at the Mill in June/July 2026. Classes will start at Del Mar College in August 2026. Interviews will be conducted in March/April 2026, with testing beginning in February/March 2026. The program combines on‑job training and academic instruction to provide the essential skills needed for a maintenance employee. Upon completion, the apprentice will have fulfilled the requirements for an associate degree and demonstrated on‑the‑job training experience.
Apprenticeship combines on‑job training and academic instruction.
Partnership with Del Mar College to create a 2‑year electrical apprenticeship track.
Classroom portion: 2 years, scheduled at 3 classroom days per week and 2 on‑job training days per week.
Employees selected for the program are required to complete 2 years of apprenticeship training regardless of prior training and/or education.
Apprentice works alongside a designated “mentor” in their respective discipline during their on‑job training days.
Graduates of the program will move to a mill at the pay rate for an entry level electrical rotating shift position.
Program Requirements
Candidate must have demonstrated electrical aptitude.
Possess a strong work ethic, positive attitude, eagerness to learn, be self‑motivated, and hardworking.
Complete a battery of assessments as well as an interview process.
Ability to participate in the program in the Sinton, Texas mill.
Must be college ready per the TSI exam.
Program Benefits
Tuition, books, and fees covered by Steel Dynamics (minimum GPA 3.0 required).
Hourly wages paid for both work and classroom hours.
