Senior Accountant Responsibilities
Oversee payroll accounting activities, ensuring payroll entries are accurate and properly recorded in the general ledger.
Prepare and post payroll-related journal entries and perform detailed reconciliations for labor, wages, benefits, payroll taxes, and associated accruals as part of the month-end close.
Partner with HR and payroll providers to resolve payroll discrepancies and timing differences.
Support payroll and payroll-related audits, including 401(k) and benefit plan audits, by preparing reconciliations, schedules, and documentation while ensuring strong internal controls.
Ensure compliance with multi-state payroll and employment tax regulations.
Review and reconcile state and local payroll tax filings, payments, and notices.
Assist with new state registrations, agency correspondence, and compliance research.
Support year-end payroll processes, including W-2 and related filings.
Own month-end close activities, including posting journal entries for prepaids, fixed assets and depreciation, and performing thorough balance sheet and P&L reconciliations in the general ledger.
Investigate and resolve variances, ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal policies.
Support client invoicing by preparing, reviewing, and submitting accurate invoices in a timely manner, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with contracts, billing schedules, and collections support.
Support cash flow forecasting by monitoring payroll, billing, and other working capital drivers and analyzing variances to forecast.
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and documentation.
Support internal and external audits by compiling documentation and providing explanations as needed.
Ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively, with team-oriented mindset.
Senior Accountant Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
4+ years of progressive accounting experience, with strong payroll accounting exposure
Hands-on experience with payroll reconciliations and multi-state payroll tax compliance
Familiarity with payroll systems
Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
Demonstrated experience with monthly close, reconciliations, and reporting
Strong in Microsoft Office Suite
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with vendors and internal stakeholders
Ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities
U.S. citizenship
Proficiency in Unanet GovCon ERP preferred
Federal Contractor experience preferred
Prior experience in a small to mid-size professional services or consulting firm preferred
