Overview

Lab Aide / Phlebotomist role at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities

Perform phlebotomies and capillary blood collections from inpatients and outpatients, both on-site and off-site. Under the direction of the Manager and/or Medical Technologist, process and order testing on specimens for reference laboratories, and perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing. Follow Quality Control Practices in relation to CLIA-waived laboratory testing. Be responsible for keeping track of all specimens submitted to pathology. Maintain good public relations with physicians and their staff, patients, and the general public. Instruct patients on proper collection of urine and stool specimens. Collect nasal washings from outpatients. Collect urine specimens for pre-employment drug screens, utilizing a chain of custody. Perform front-end laboratory compliance checks and follow Medicare Medical Necessity rules. Monitor customer concerns and daily workflow. May perform other duties within the laboratory as needed. Qualifications

Confidentiality: Frequent access to patient records; maintain full confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. Skills: Strong written, oral and organizational skills; attention to detail; knowledge of medical terminology; blood collection techniques on all age groups; pre-employment drug screen collections; basics of pre-analytical testing variables; computer skills; excellent customer service; ability to liaison between clients and providers. Knowledge: Laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity; testing requirements for collecting, processing, and ordering. License/Certification

Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association. Education

High School diploma or equivalent. Must provide a copy of diploma. Completion of an accredited phlebotomist program or on-the-job training with experience. Experience

One year experience as a phlebotomist desired, preferably in a hospital and/or clinic setting. Physical Demands and Work Environment / ADA Compliance

Need to work with tight turnarounds for specimen collection and transport back to the laboratory. The job requires frequent exposure to odors and infectious materials. Frequent walking to collect and pick up specimens from remote sites. Position involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). May be required to sit for extended periods. Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment.
