General Description Under the direction of the Program Manager of Counseling Services and within federal, state and local guidelines, Therapist I performs advanced therapeutic work. The role involves providing counseling under minimal supervision, with latitude for independent judgment. The therapist will have flexible hours based upon program needs and approval of leadership.

Education, Training, and Experience

Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, sociology, social work, or another human services field is required.

Current licensing from the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC‑A), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFT‑A), or a Licensed Masters Level Social Worker (LMSW) who is currently in the process of seeking their Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license.

All applicants must be under clinical supervision and working toward full clinical licensure.

One year of counseling experience is preferred.

Registration, Certification, Licensure, and Other Qualifications

Background and criminal history must be free from any disqualifying offenses per the Texas Administrative Code (TAC) and the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Valid driver's license and automobile insurance required; out-of-state license holders must obtain Texas license within 30 days.

Successful completion of all position‑specific training within 30 days of employment is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of evidence‑based therapeutic modalities (CBT, TF‑CBT, CPT, trauma‑informed approaches); ethical guidelines, confidentiality laws, HIPAA, professional standards; community and government service delivery systems; case management delivery systems; case guidelines, regulations, and policies; interviewing techniques; mental illness and emotional components of physical illness; rehabilitation methods; individual needs of disabilities; community mental health resources and referral processes.

Skill in crisis intervention, de‑escalation, and safety planning; therapeutic counseling skills with individuals, families, and/or groups; effective communication skills, written and verbal; time management and organization to balance caseloads and meet documentation timelines; interviewing; and conducting individual needs assessments.

Ability to provide services to individuals with serious mental illness, co‑occurring disorders, and high social needs; work effectively in fast‑paced, resource‑limited environments; collaborate in interdisciplinary teams; convey instructions and explanations to clients and stakeholders; negotiate available services; train others.

Ability to display regular and reliable attendance.

Understanding and practice of Trauma‑Informed Care principles.

Physical demands include travel to various Center locations; willingness to see clients across age groups.

Essential Duties

Provides face‑to‑face and telehealth sessions to individuals, groups, and families using CBT, TF‑CBT, and CPT as mandated by the State of Texas.

Conducts clinical assessments, including biopsychosocial and risk assessments.

Provides crisis intervention services, including risk assessments, de‑escalation, and safety planning following agency protocols.

Full‑time therapists provide 25 completed sessions to clients per week. Part‑time therapists provide 15 completed sessions to clients per week.

Has face‑to‑face and video contact with client’s legally authorized representative, if required.

Develops individual treatment plans; assesses and reassesses clients’ support systems and available community resources, schools, and facilities per HHSC guidelines.

Ensures all documentation for services rendered is submitted to the Center within 2 business days.

Willingness to travel to various Center locations based on program need.

Participates in case consultations, clinical reviews, and supervision as assigned.

Provides guidance or mentorship to interns, Therapist I staff, or newer clinicians as needed.

Maintains compliance with required training deadlines.

Collaborates on discharges for clients with client, family, interdisciplinary treatment team, and community resources.

Complies with HHSC and Authority guidelines and regulations for all services rendered.

Records, reports and evaluates client progress on Authority’s Progress Notes through Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Participates in the Center’s Zero Suicide Initiative.

Supports individuals experiencing a crisis by promptly connecting them with appropriate Center programs (e.g., Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, Psychiatric Triage, Crisis Prevention services, etc.); coordinates to facilitate timely intervention.

Remains with individuals, when safe, to provide support and maintain a calm environment until specialized crisis staff or emergency personnel arrive.

Participates in debriefing sessions with supervisor or designated staff after a crisis event; collaborates to review incident, identify lessons, and ensure compliance with HHSC guidelines and Center policies.
