Overview
Horticulturist I
– Georgia Institute of Technology Responsible for planning, maintenance, and operations of the campus community garden, student garden spaces, and an outreach hydroponic garden. Manages and mentors student volunteers, plans and hosts educational programs, and collaborates with campus partners to advance sustainability goals.
Responsibilities
Plan, design, and oversee maintenance of the campus community garden, student garden spaces, and outreach hydroponic garden.
Recruit, train, and coordinate student, faculty, and staff volunteers for meaningful engagement in garden operations.
Implement sustainable gardening practices (composting, organic pest management, rainwater harvesting).
Maintain garden infrastructure, tools, equipment, and irrigation systems.
Track and manage garden budgets; maintain detailed records of activities and outcomes.
Design and deliver workshops, demonstrations, and seminars on gardening, sustainability, and environmental stewardship; collaborate with faculty to integrate garden‑based learning into coursework and research projects.
Organize guided tours and hands‑on learning experiences for visitors.
Plan and execute garden events (seasonal festivals, harvest celebrations); manage event logistics and collaborate with campus departments and student organizations.
Cultivate partnerships with local organizations, schools, and community groups.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Technical Diploma, Associate's Degree, or two years of college coursework, or equivalent education and experience.
Two to three years of job‑related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Georgia Commercial Pesticide License and Category 24 certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to work independently in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment.
Occasional travel up to 10% of the time; ability to handle objects up to 20 lbs.
Landscape maintenance and management experience.
Community outreach and event/program coordination.
Experience with organic gardening practices, soil health management, crop rotation, and integrated pest management.
Knowledge of horticultural practices, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), landscape design, turf management, plant selection, and cultivation.
Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
