Job Duties THIS IS A WAGE POSITION WITH NO BENEFITS.

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self‑determination, and wellness across all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities, including 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or substance use disorder. This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72‑bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility located in Danville, VA.

What you will do:

Psychiatric Technicians work directly with patients to achieve therapeutic goals through daily living activities (ADLs), attend to patients’ concerns, encourage participation in activities, manage behavior problems and crisis situations, and promote coping skills to address realities of judicial controls as required. This role involves working with patients who may become verbally or physically aggressive. As a Psychiatric Technician you are responsible for understanding and using the least restrictive interventions per hospital policy and for avoiding seclusion and restraint whenever possible.

Required Abilities

Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate client behavior through observation, conversation, and listening

Interact with patients in a therapeutic manner

Monitor and report changes in patients’ medical and psychiatric status

Lift heavy objects (greater than 50 pounds)

Walk and/or stand a minimum of 75% of the shift time

Complete a 4‑week New Employee Orientation; Orientation hours are from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with a one‑hour lunch break for Week 1, followed by scheduled sessions for Weeks 2‑4, which may include evenings/nights

Shift Schedule This position will work up to 28 hours per week on evening/night shifts (AMP/PM). The role will also work minimally every other weekend and holidays on a rotating basis.

Shift Differentials Second shift includes a $2.50/hour differential weekdays and $3.00/hour weekends and weekday holidays. Third shift includes a $2.25/hour differential weekdays and $3.00/hour weekends and weekday holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid driver’s license, maintained throughout employment

Basic computer skills; trained to complete documentation in an Electronic Health Record (EHR)

Additional Considerations

High school diploma/GED

Experience in psychiatric, healthcare, acute care, long‑term, or correctional settings

Veterans and individuals with national service experience

Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English

CNA license / QMHP certification
