Industrial Safety Specialist will support the space program located at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama.
The selected candidate will be responsible for performing and reviewing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety compliance inspections.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspections, Certifications, Permitting, and Training:
Perform OSHA safety compliance inspections in accordance with 29 CFR 1960.25, Qualification of Safety and Health and Agency Inspectors, and 29 CFR 1960.26, Conduct of Inspections, and NPR 8715.1, NASA Occupational Safety and Health Programs, of all MSFC owned or occupied facilities as well as all ongoing construction projects.
Issue safety permits for hazardous operations (e.g. Hot Work Permit, Lockout/Tag outs).
Safety Requirements Compliance & Documentation Review:
Perform safety evaluations to ensure compliance with industry consensus codes and Government safety program requirements for preliminary engineering studies, feasibility studies, building, facility and equipment drawings and specifications.
Trade Studies & Design/Operations Safety Input:
Actively participate in trade studies for design, development, and facility operations projects to ensure safety requirements are met, risks are identified/characterized, and appropriate mitigations are implemented.
Mishap Investigation:
Perform investigations for mishaps, close calls, and OSHA recordables per MWI 8621.1.
Operational Safety Review:
Operating procedures for compliance with approved safety controls and verification requirements.
Tracking, Reporting & Deliverables:
Present safety status during weekly meetings, and other program reviews; provide required SMASS contract deliverables (bi‑weekly/monthly activity reports).
Perform additional safety specialist tasks assigned in support of the Industrial Safety Branch and overall program safety posture.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires US Citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
Must have a bachelor's degree in safety, health or industrial hygiene, or a related field such as engineering or science.
Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience.
In lieu of degree: candidates with 9+ years of recent and related work experience will be considered.
Experience in safety promotion and safety culture.
Safety Training Experience (OSHA 10/OSHA 30, or other equivalent compliance training).
Must possess demonstrable experience in the performance of safety inspections and documenting results (development of mishap reports, Job Hazard Analyses, construction or operational inspection reports).
Able to work with minimum to no supervision.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Skilled in working with both contractors and NASA system owners and building managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner.
Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance processes and procedures is highly desired.
Experience in assessing hazardous operations, feasibility studies, building/equipment specifications.
Familiarity with documenting evaluations, inspections, and non‑compliances in systems like Safe Suite or other government‑designated databases.
WORK LOCATION
This position is located onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off; some travel may be required.
Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED All Bastion employees must be able to pass a national agency check and some positions require clearance and will require an extensive background verification/check process.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING REQUIRED All Bastion employees must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and are required to participate in periodic random drug and alcohol screenings.

Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time) and may require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
