Fire and Life Safety Specialist (BT-26003)

The Fire and Life Safety Specialist will support the space program located at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama.
The selected candidate will be responsible for performing and reviewing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety compliance inspections.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspections, Certifications, and Permitting : Perform fire and life safety compliance inspections in accordance with NASA-STD-8719.11. Additionally, perform final inspections on construction projects, witness testing of fire protection equipment and systems, and review special hazard systems.
Perform annual fire drill evacuations for buildings at MSFC.
Training : Provide support for the development and execution of fire safety educational programs and material. Support includes the development, planning, and execution of educational campaigns, training material, and classes across the Center or at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) and teaching relevant classes such as hands‑on fire extinguisher training.
Trade Studies & Design/Operations Safety Input : Provide facilities system safety plans and project review services to include development of initial requirements, identification of deficiencies, researching and collaborating to develop solutions, and making recommendations on design modifications to meet established requirements.
Provide support for the development of equivalent designs where systems do not meet minimum fire and life safety requirements.
Fire Investigation : Conduct origin and cause of fire investigations at MSFC or the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF).
Tracking, Reporting & Deliverables : Present safety status during weekly meetings, and other program reviews; provide required SMASS contract deliverables (bi‑weekly/monthly activity reports).
Perform additional safety specialist tasks as assigned in support of the Industrial Safety Branch and overall program safety posture.
REQUIRED:
This position requires US citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
This position requires 5+ years of recent and related work experience.
Requires an associate degree in fire science or closely related field from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university.
In Lieu of degree:
Candidates with 7+ years of recent and related work experience will be considered.
Requires expert knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern fire suppression, prevention, and community risk reduction strategies.
IFSAC/Pro‑Board certified Fire Inspector I required or equivalent.
IFSAC/Pro‑Board certified Fire Plans Examiner or equivalent or able to obtain within 18 months of hire.
IAAI or NAFI certified fire investigator certified or able to obtain within 2 years of hire.
Must possess demonstrable experience in the performance of safety inspections and documenting results (e.g., documenting fire and life safety deficiencies, creating emergency evacuation plans, and operational inspection reports).
Must have comprehensive knowledge of fire, building and life safety codes and OSHA law and regulations and be able to apply them to both new construction and the built environment.
Must have strong background in fire investigation including documentation and preservation of evidence and fire scene safety.
Able to work with minimum to no supervision.
DESIRED:
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with Industrial Safety staff, MSFC employees, and Redstone Arsenal Fire and Emergency Services staff.
Prior experience with NASA Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired.
Familiarity with documenting evaluations, inspections, and non‑compliances in systems like SafeSuite or other government‑designated databases.
Previous experience in an all‑hazard fire service organization in an operational role.
Previous fire prevention/community risk reduction experience.
WORK LOCATION:
This position is located onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off; some travel may be required.
Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED: All Bastion employees must be able to pass a national agency check and some positions require clearance and will require an extensive background verification/check process.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING REQUIRED: All Bastion employees must be able to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and are required to participate in periodic random drug and alcohol screenings.

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time) and may require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
