Position Summary The Risk Services Coordinator is responsible for developing, administering, and overseeing the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow’s comprehensive risk management programs. This position protects employees, property, financial assets, and the public by identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks related to liability, property loss, workers’ compensation, and insurance claims.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement and evaluate risk management and loss control programs to reduce legal, financial, and operational exposure
Manage liability, property, automobile, fire, and workers’ compensation claims, including investigations, documentation, and coordination with insurers and legal counsel
Oversee the City-County’s workers’ compensation and Return-to-Work programs, including claims administration, wage loss coordination, and employee support
Analyze risk exposures related to City-County operations, facilities, vehicles, special events, and public services; recommend mitigation strategies
Maintain and manage property, fleet, and equipment insurance data, valuations, certificates of insurance, and coverage documentation
Coordinate annual property and liability insurance assessments and assist with insurance budgeting and cost allocation reporting
Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety, insurance, and loss control regulations, including OSHA and Montana Safety and Health requirements
Prepare and maintain reports, records, and statistical data related to claims, insurance programs, OSHA reporting, and safety metrics
Review contracts, leases, and agreements for insurance requirements and risk transfer provisions
Respond to citizen complaints and liability concerns in coordination with internal and external stakeholders
Serve on assigned committees, including emergency planning and land sales, and provide technical risk management guidance
Act as backup to the Safety and Health Coordinator, as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of public-sector risk management, workers’ compensation, and property and casualty insurance
Ability to interpret insurance policies, endorsements, exclusions, and contractual risk provisions
Skill in analyzing risk exposures, claims data, and loss trends and recommending practical solutions
Ability to communicate effectively with leadership, employees, injured workers and families, insurers, attorneys, and the public
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
Proficiency with standard computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, and claims management systems
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet
one or more
of the following:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field, with supplemental training in risk management or loss control;
or
Extensive experience in safety, health, or environmental health administration;
or
Considerable experience administering a comprehensive public‑sector risk management, safety, or loss control program;
or
Any equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating the required knowledge and abilities
Required Special Qualifications
Valid Montana Driver’s License
Must reside within Butte-Silver Bow during employment, per City-County ordinance
