In 2020 the Lee County Child Maltreatment Needs Assessment survey reports findings that place Lee County at 99 out of 99 counties for youth neglect. The FMAAA Art Center can conceive youth (& adult) programming that will enable the Arts Center to assist with finding solutions for this pervasive situation afflicting youth in our community. Offering after‑school/weekend/summer programming to support the needs of at‑risk youth will foremost provide a safe space for kids to gather but also expose them to creative thinking and other innovative skills that may be leveraged into future career paths. There is an extensive GROW LEE economic development program offered aimed at school‑age youth to support STEM development. We propose that STEAM (with Art added back in) provides creative problem solving and critical thinking skills that underpin those disciplines while more broadly including visual learners. Specifically – with the talent and focus of a VISTA member – we intend to develop programming that includes creative classes and activities centered around subjects traditionally recognized as arts based but also push farther into current topics like digital art, Augmented Reality (A/R) and other technology‑based design providing some initial skills‑based learning that may help set youth (& adults) on a path for a better future and break the cycle of generational poverty that pervades our community.
