Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Yard Hostler is responsible for ensuring trailers are moved within the yard in a safe and efficient manner using a Terminal Tractor. The Yard Hostler also manages yard housekeeping, enforces yard rules and standards, and maintains a safe working environment.
Responsibilities
Use all equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) safely.
Complete pre‑trip inspections and maintain energy sources for the Terminal Tractor and other equipment.
Safely operate a Terminal Tractor to move trailers in and out of dock doors and parking stalls.
Inspect trailers to ensure mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
Perform trailer inventory checks and yard audits.
Maintain records, logs, and forms, including required inspection sheets.
Operate other powered industrial trucks (PIT), forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and other equipment as needed.
Use electronic equipment to track inventory accurately.
Work as a team to prevent yard bottlenecks and continuously improve processes.
Build strong relationships with team members and business partners.
Qualifications
Minimum one year of Yard Hostler or similar experience (preferred).
Prior exposure to CPG and/or Food & Beverage industries (preferred).
Decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
Basic understanding of computer and warehouse management (WM) systems.
Fluent in English; additional language skills beneficial.
Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb steps or ladders.
Occasional lift of up to 75 pounds.
Exposure to moving mechanical parts, varying temperatures, and weather conditions.
Certification to responsibly operate Terminal Tractor and PIT equipment.
At least 18 years old.
Verbal and written communication skills.
Active driver’s license and clean driving record.
