Overview

Special Education Teacher – Self Contained. This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate with an endorsement in special education and involves planning and providing learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The teacher creates a flexible program and learning environment, may modify general education curriculum to meet students’ needs with supplemental supports, and maintains positive relationships with students, parents, and staff. The site principal evaluates the teacher. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. This position’s grade level, content area taught, and work site may change based on student enrollment and district staffing needs. Some positions are eligible for retirement system benefits depending on FTE. The successful candidate will receive an additional 6% salary increase. This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. Information on the pay scale is available through the Labor Relations Department. Can describe their philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to their practice. Understands how students learn and develop, and applies that knowledge in their practice. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere. Organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time and assessment. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like to communicate these objectives to students. Teaches students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics. Knows the teacher's content area and how to teach it. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils. Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Has the ability to use current technology to enhance instruction and for record-keeping and research. Applies knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program. Facilitates, monitors, and assesses student learning; evaluates pupils' academic and social growth and keeps appropriate records. Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individualized education plans. Creates and maintains a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and contributing members; provides individualized and small group instruction as needed. Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students; uses displays, centers, and student work exhibits to enhance interest. Supervises students, the learning environment, and volunteers. Works in partnership with parents, families, and the community; communicates regularly with parents by newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc. Participates in and contributes to the teaching profession. Qualifications

Required : A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education. Evidence of content knowledge shown by a posted degree in the content area, or a posted minor in the content area, or passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area, or an endorsement in the content area. Educators teaching Kindergarten through 3rd grade must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act. Evidence of experience working with special education students. Preferred : Experience working with special education students and experience collaborating to support IEP needs in a public school setting. Physical / Mental Demands

The physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Visual and other physical requirements apply. Ability to manage stress and work effectively with diverse groups in a dynamic environment is needed. Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional environment with diverse individuals. There may be exposure to video displays and outdoor weather conditions; noise levels are usually moderate. Additional Information
