Denver Public Library operates across multiple branches, and employees may be assigned to work at different locations to meet evolving operational needs.
About Our Position DPL is hiring two Security Officer II positions at the Central Library in downtown Denver to create positive experiences for library customers by maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and staff. You will receive on‑the‑job training to develop skills and abilities related to the position, including certification in First Aid, CPR and AED usage, Narcan usage, defensive tactics, and verbal de‑escalation. The Security Department operates 24/7. This position is based at the Central Library, with pay‑to‑park options and regular employees eligible for an ECO Pass. Uniforms and training are provided.
What You Would Do
Solid customer service background committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment.
Knowledge of safety and security in a public setting.
Knowledge of emergency procedures, safety hazards and team delegation.
Proficiency with workplace technology (email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing).
Ability to thrive in a diverse environment with constant public contact.
Skill in creatively solving problems and handling stressful situations, including those involving trauma, mental illness, substance abuse, and unhoused populations.
Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and sense of humor.
Skill in de‑escalation and positive communication.
Ability to write clear and grammatically correct reports.
Pass physical and mental fitness examinations and a background check.
Complete Narcan, Verbal De‑escalation, and Defensive Tactics training.
Obtain an unarmed security guard license issued by the City and County of Denver.
Preferred experience with Trauma‑Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid.
Commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for young people including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.
Experience working with security or loss prevention (one year preferred).
Available to work evening or weekend shifts.
Flexible to work at any DPL branch.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.
Two (2) years of experience with security and safety issues, including reporting unauthorized activity or emergencies.
Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
Unarmed Business Guard License issued by the City and County of Denver at the time of employment.
First aid and CPR certification by the American Red Cross within 60 days of hire.
Licenses and certifications must be kept current.
Substitutions
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
Work Environment Our locations are public spaces with shared and collaborative work areas, requiring high flexibility, adaptability, and responsiveness.
