Job Description Summary An instructor in this position will conduct college courses for undergraduate students in the Veterinary Medical Technology Program.
This individual must possess the knowledge and skills to teach and supervise students in classroom, lab and clinical settings.
We are seeking a dedicated and team‑oriented Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) to join our Clinical Practices team. The successful candidate will serve primarily in our outpatient clinic, working with shelter animals and collaborating closely with other veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) instructors. This role also includes teaching and mentoring aspiring veterinary technician students in a hands‑on, clinical learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide medical care to shelter animals through our outpatient clinic.
Perform common small animal surgical procedures and dentistry with proficiency.
Collaborate with fellow veterinarians and RVT instructors to ensure high‑quality patient care.
Supervise and teach veterinary technician students in a clinical practice setting.
Maintain clear and accurate medical records and support a culture of learning and clinical excellence.
Duties
Instruct, supervise and assist students in classroom, lab and clinical environments incorporating knowledge, expertise and flexibility to ensure safety and student learning. Work directly with the Buncombe County Animal shelter to provide clinical experience to the students.
Actively participate in development of teaching materials, activities and handouts for the course assigned.
Instruct or assist in lab or clinic by teaching or facilitation of skills or grading of skill competencies. Also acting as a veterinarian for our clinical site, including routine surgical procedures and animal wellness.
Collaborate with departmental personnel and Buncombe County Animal Shelter in curriculum revisions/updates which reflect changing trends, information and technologies and ensure compliance with the American Veterinary Association, Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities approved standards for the curriculum and the Criteria of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Abide by policies, standards, goals and objectives of the College and Department.
Participate in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities to improve the instructional quality of the program.
Practice, teach and supervise students to facilitate compliance with OSHA standards related to veterinary medicine.
Maintain professional certification (DVM license in the state of NC) and seek opportunities for professional development through study, seminars, and/or on‑the‑job practice.
Serve as resource to veterinary community and community at large.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM).
Minimum 3 years of work experience in veterinary medicine.
Unrestricted license with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience at the college level.
Teaching experience with veterinary technology students.
