Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Do you have a passion for making a difference in Coloradans’ lives? The DMV provides Colorado credentials such as driver licenses, instruction permits, commercial driver licenses, and identification cards.
What We Do The Driver License section provides Colorado credentials to citizens throughout the state.
A Typical Day in the Life of a Driver License Technician Trainee In this trainee role, you will learn to ensure compliance with Colorado Revised Statutes and federal laws, department policies, rules and procedures in the issuance of Colorado documents to qualified applicants. Once trained and certified, you may have an opportunity to promote.
Primary Duties
Interact with customers as the primary point of contact.
Communicate with customers about their needs, eligibility, and ensure compliance.
Assess the applicant's behavior and source documents and exercise first‑line decision‑making related to acceptability of source documents, proof of identity, suspected fraud, medical requirements, etc.
Process computer‑generated driver’s license, identification documents and hearing requests.
Administer written, oral, automated testing and grade examinations for all classes of commercial, standard and motorcycle licenses and permits.
Qualify applicants for a driver’s license and Colorado ID card by determining applicant’s needs and eligibility.
Assess authenticity of documentation by comparing applicant’s statements with available data.
Collect and account for money received for all documents issued (maintaining a cash drawer, counting cash, and balancing receipts).
May be required to travel and work between multiple Driver License Offices. The successful candidate will be required to sit and stand for long periods throughout the day.
Residency Requirement Only residents of the State of Colorado at the time of application are eligible. Applicants must have a Colorado address and a Colorado State‑issued driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications Must meet one of the following or any combination of experience/education to meet the MQ qualifications.
Option 1
1 year of experience in a customer service role.
Option 2
College or university coursework in Business Administration, Accounting, Public Administration, Management, Information Technology, or a similar field may substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
State experience in a work environment where laws, rules and regulations are applied.

Prior work in a high‑stress environment maintaining a professional attitude.
Collaboration and teamwork skills.
Prior work in accounting, counting cash, and balancing receipts.
Driver License Systems Fundamentals (DLF Certification) Newly hired (or transferred) Driver License Technician Trainees are designated “in training” for the first year in this position. They receive DLF training and regular skill evaluations. Completion of DLF Certification is required within the first year; failure may result in removal from position and possible termination. After one year, the trainee may be reallocated to Technician II.
Conditions Of Employment With The CDOR Employees operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence. Personnel must file Colorado Individual Income Tax returns, undergo a pre‑employment tax record evaluation, and complete a background investigation and reference check. Positions that involve operating state property require a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Workers assigned a state fleet vehicle or required to operate one will undergo Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) review.
