Experienced Dispatcher / Customer Service – Construction Services and Trucking Position Overview Shelby Materials is hiring a Ready-Mix Concrete Dispatcher to take customer orders, schedule concrete deliveries, and dispatch ready-mix trucks to jobsites safely and efficiently in the Columbus, Indiana area.

This role is the hub between customers, drivers, and plant operations: balancing service, production capacity, and changing jobsite conditions throughout the day.

We're looking for someone with dispatch experience in ready-mix or a closely related field such as over-the-road trucking logistics, freight brokering, dump truck dispatching, construction materials dispatch, or similar high-volume, time-sensitive operations.

Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Order Taking

Responsible for facilitating orders and schedule for delivery of ready-mix concrete; accurately inputting order information into dispatch software (mix designs, quantities, add-ons, delivery times, jobsite details, and special instructions).

Prioritize customer needs: monitor real time progress and adjust schedules as conditions change.

Set clear expectations with customers on delivery timing, focused on up-front communication especially when trucks are tight, jobs change, or delays occur.

Dispatch & Fleet Management

Dispatch and actively manage your assigned plant and trucks throughout the day: allocate trucks and adjust orders to meet job priorities.

Use dispatch software/GPS tools effectively to improve decision-making and keep demand information accurate.

Be confident in making decisions and adjusting schedules in fast paced situations.

Internal Communication

Communicate job specs and changes clearly with quality control, batch, and drivers (mix design changes, slump/air requirements, PPE, etc.)

Address potential job-site issues quickly and without blame: (late starts, access issues, placement problems, rejected loads, or safety concerns)

Enforce rules and expectations: safe operation, incident reporting, and completing required documentation promptly (accidents, work comp forms, etc.).

What Success Looks Like

Customers feel taken care of, informed, and treated professionally even on busy days.

Trucks stay utilized efficiently with minimal dead time, and jobs are serviced with the right number of trucks.

Data entry is accurate, and dispatch tools are used consistently to support reliable planning.

Be able to communicate effectively, clearly, and professionally both with customers and co-workers.

Required Qualifications

2+ years dispatch experience in ready-mix concrete or similar fast-paced transportation or logistics environment (OTR, dump, freight, construction materials).

Strong phone presence: professional, friendly, confident, and able to handle complex situations when needed.

Proven ability to make calm, calculated decisions under pressure and prioritize tasks.

Solid computer skills and willingness to utilize technology.

Ability to communicate clearly with customers, drivers, and internal teams.

Preferred: Experience using dispatch/batching systems (e.g., Command Alkon, Systech, Marcotte, or similar).
