This position will be located at the Public Works Yard THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR BOTH HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR TRAINEE AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR. JOB SUMMARY - HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR TRAINEE PAY GRADE 05 STARTING SALARY: $34,500.00 Perform entry-level work in the operation of specialized trucks and motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions in the Public Works Department (PWD). Under close supervision, operate tools and equipment in accordance with safety regulations and procedures. This is a trainee position that can transfer into the Heavy Equipment Operator Series. Non-Competitive appointment into the Heavy Equipment Operator is contingent on successful completion of the certifications and training specified. JOB SUMMARY - HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR PAY GRADE 07 STARTING SALARY: $39,411.00 Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of specialized trucks and motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions in the Public Works Department (PWD) and operate tools and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures under basic supervision. Heavy Equipment Trainee Operate a variety of specialized equipment to maintain Pinal County roads, roadways, drainage systems, and infrastructure, following safety regulations. Operate PWD vehicles and motorized equipment, including light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, and backhoes. Perform manual labor tasks, repair potholes, clear debris, move and set barricades. Work on assigned projects and make decisions based on experience. Maintain daily logs, reports, and maintenance records. Clean and perform routine maintenance on trucks and equipment; identify and report problems requiring repair. Follow safety rules, report hazards, and assist with safety procedures. Perform duties during emergencies and cross-train in PWD methods and safety. Clean up spills and unsafe conditions promptly. Follow written and verbal instructions; uphold accountability, commitment, and teamwork values. Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and restricted information. Perform other related duties as required. Heavy Equipment Operator Operate heavy equipment to maintain roads, drainage, and infrastructure in accordance with safety regulations. Work independently to operate a range of equipment including graders, dozers, end dumps, and more. Repair roads, spread asphalt, seal cracks, haul materials, and maintain bridges and culverts. Manage projects to ensure safety compliance and timely completion. Perform manual tasks, logs, maintenance, and report issues as needed. Follow safety rules and participate in safety training and procedures. Perform other related duties as required. Heavy Equipment Trainee – Qualifications High school diploma or GED or equivalent. Equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that demonstrates ability to perform duties. Valid Arizona Driver’s License required within 30 days of hire. Must obtain Class A Arizona CDL with tanker endorsements within first 5 months; failure to maintain CDL may be grounds for termination. Preferred Qualifications One year of construction or related equipment experience. CPR/First Aid Certified. Valid CDL Permit; Special Requirements: Trainees must obtain Class A CDL Learner's Permit within 90 days to stay on track for CDL. Heavy Equipment Operator – Qualifications Three years of experience in construction, maintenance, or related equipment OR one year as a Pinal County Operator (Trainee). Must obtain Class A CDL with tanker endorsements within 5 months; failure to maintain CDL may be grounds for termination. Equivalent combination of training or experience. Preferred Qualifications HAZWOPER certification; First Aid/CPR/AED on hire; Basic work zone & traffic control certification on hire. Evening, night, and weekend work may be required. Special Requirements Trainees who are rehires ( Rehires will be placed on a case-by-case basis. Heavy Equipment Trainee – Knowledge & Abilities Knowledge of roadway materials, safety rules, hazards, chemical handling, SDS; skill in operating and maintaining tools; ability to follow directions and work with others; knowledge of computers; ability to work with others to complete tasks. Heavy Equipment Operator Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, equipment used in roadway maintenance; knowledge of MUTCD, AZ-DOT standards, and safety regulations; knowledge of county geography and safety; ability to promote safe work practices and to operate equipment; ability to communicate with residents about project status. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is very heavy and requires lifting and moving heavy objects, frequent bending and standing, and ability to operate vehicles and equipment. May be on-call. WORK ENVIRONMENT Outside work with varying weather conditions. NOTICE TO APPLICANTS We value professionalism and respect.
