Overview
Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)
invites dynamic team players to apply for the position of
Safety Officer . This role will provide customer service to the citizens of Maryland every day, ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, Local and MTA Safety regulations.
Location: Baltimore City, Maryland.
This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this MTA position/function only. All interested persons will need to re‑apply for any future recruitments conducted for this classification.
Applicants with degrees granted outside of the United States must provide a written evaluation of education documentation by a credentialing organization such as International Credential Evaluation (WES). Use www.wes.org for reference.
Responsibilities Oversee the MTA Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan and ensure compliance across passenger, employee, commuter bus, commuter rail, light rail, bus, mobility and metro subway modes. Conduct safety engineering, education, and specified safety operations for assigned areas. Inspect vehicles, support vehicles, facilities, sites, designs, specifications and identify hazards. Perform risk assessments and prevent accidents and unsafe conditions. Participate in internal and external audits of contracted providers and provide Quality Assurance oversight.
Write and revise standard operating procedures, make safety risk mitigation recommendations, and produce daily reports as required. Work with modal departments to ensure timely corrective action plan (CAP) compliance. Investigate incidents/accidents, determine causes, recommend improvements, and complete factual and comprehensive reports. Conduct daily field observations of the MTA system. Promote safety and communication by capturing and acting upon issues from employees. The Safety Officer will usually not supervise other staff but may take charge at an accident or incident if necessary.
Act as liaison with MTA personnel to review plans and specifications for renovations, new construction, and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and safety certification of bus, rail and industrial operations. Organize and lead monthly modal Safety Committee meetings to discuss safety issues and determine action items specific to each MTA mode.
Qualifications Education : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, transportation or a related technical field.
Experience : Two years of experience interpreting, developing, implementing and ensuring compliance of safety regulations within a bus, rail or industrial work environment.
Additional Exchange : Additional graduate education may substitute for experience (tertiary credit hour equivalents). Additional work experience may substitute for required college education as per the Maryland Department of Transportation guidelines.

Employees may be exposed to toxic materials, asbestos, flammable or combustible agents requiring appropriate safety equipment.
Employees are subject to a 24‑hour on‑call duty and must maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back requirements.
Employees may be required to undergo substance abuse testing in accordance with ORMA Regulations 11.02.11.
Employees must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.
