Overview
Under the supervision of the Director of Golf Bob Schulz, the Assistant Director of Golf Course Maintenance is responsible for the overall maintenance, operation, and management of the Golf Course grounds, facilities, and equipment. The Assistant Director of Golf Course Maintenance works closely with the Director of Golf to ensure seamless coordination of grounds maintenance, golf operations, special events, and seasonal demands. The role includes leading grounds staff, overseeing equipment and turf management programs, managing budgets, and ensuring the course meets high agronomic and operational standards. Qualifications
Associate degree in Turf Management, Horticulture, or related field; OR minimum 4 years of equivalent work and training experience. Minimum of 4 years supervisory experience and field work experience. Current state pesticide applicator certification. Working knowledge of golf course tees, greens, and fairways. Strong understanding of equipment maintenance, internal combustion engines, mowing equipment, and automotive apparatuses. Ability to diagnose mechanical issues, perform repairs, and maintain preventative maintenance programs. Valid Illinois Driver’s License (Class B CDL helpful). Ability to enforce policies, supervise staff, and maintain accurate records. Ability to lift/move heavy objects and work in various weather conditions. Knowledge of the game of golf and how maintenance impacts playability. Strong understanding of inventory control and budgeting practices. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (Online is acceptable). Primary Responsibilities Grounds & Course Maintenance: Plan, supervise, and assist in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, landscaping, and all course features. Oversee construction and renovation projects. Execute and supervise pesticide and fertilizer applications. Monitor weather conditions to guide maintenance planning. Plan and execute agronomic programs to achieve long-term course standards and goals. Manage irrigation systems, including pumps, controls, wells, and drainage solutions. Forecast and plan the golf season for turf, plants, shrubs, and trees.
Equipment & Fleet Management: Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues for all golf course equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles and machinery. Maintain preventative maintenance programs and all equipment records, including inventory, purchases, and repair logs. Prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks; perform emergency repairs as needed on and off the course. Supervise use, cleaning, and safety of all equipment and oversee golf cart fleet maintenance. Maintain the maintenance shop area.
Budget & Financial Oversight: Prepare the annual department budget. Monitor monthly revenues and expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets. Forecast and manage specific budget line items with strict adherence to guidelines.
Staff Supervision, Training & Development: Manage full-time and part-time grounds staff, including hiring, scheduling, task assignment, and daily supervision. Establish departmental goals and conduct annual evaluations. Provide staff training on equipment operation, maintenance, safety practices, and technical procedures. Promote a safe working environment and enforce Park District policies. Issue disciplinary actions, including termination, when required. Coordinate paid time off for full-time employees.
Payroll Administration: Oversee and approve bi-weekly payroll for all Golf Course maintenance staff. Submit salary changes and additional pay rates while ensuring compliance with state minimum wage laws.
Reporting: Provide monthly reports as needed to the Director of Golf. Supply additional information as requested by the Board of Commissioners or Executive Director. Assist in preparing end-of-day updates and monthly Board Report information.
Community Relations: Attend community functions to promote Park District and Golf Course programs, support, and awareness.
Secondary/Support Responsibilities: Assist with special events, projects, and emergency needs as directed by the Director of Golf.
