Essential Job Functions

Assist judge within a courtroom for Prince George's County Circuit Court, including calling cases, administering oaths, marking and tracking exhibits, recording witnesses, and listening to courtroom events.

Enter judge's findings in the case management system; distribute court rulings; ensure all functions of the Judiciary in the courtroom are completed accurately.

In‑court responsibilities: prepare courtroom; ensure dockets and necessary forms are available; take simultaneous notes of proceedings to create a written record; generate paperwork; secure signatures; prepare orders; administer oaths; keep accurate logs; operate recording system; scan documents into MDEC system; maintain exhibits; process for hearing or appeal; handle phone and counter inquiries from attorneys, judges, and state agencies.

In‑office responsibilities: type docket entries; print forms; stock cabinets; scan documents into MDEC system.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, including one (1) year in court operations or fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Substitutions: A Bachelor’s degree, Paralegal/Associate Degree or 60 college credits, Paralegal Certificate may substitute required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, and equipment; legal terminology; judicial policies; basic English and arithmetic.

Skill in operating recording equipment, computer terminals, related software; typing; managing priorities and meeting deadlines.

Ability to acquire knowledge of Maryland Judiciary procedures; make decisions; apply job-related terminology; communicate clearly with judges, public, police, attorneys, and court officials; follow procedures; multitask; handle pressure; exercise discretion; pay attention to detail; maintain filing systems; establish effective relationships.

Physical Requirements Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Personal computer to review case files, reroute files to other departments, update exhibit information and assist the public.

Printers/Scanners.

Digital Recording System/Court Smart to record courtroom proceedings.

Fax Machine to fax release orders and commitments.

Xerox machine to make copies of docket entries and other court‑related documents.

Software and Computer Skills

Microsoft Office – Docket Entries.

Connect – Timesheets, Leave Request, Schedule Training Classes.

ACS – Docket Entries.

CAPS – Forms, Reports.

Adobe Suite – Scanning corrections.
