Let’s Play Trailer Staff – Special Events Focus

Overview
Let’s Play Mobile Recreation staff support City-sponsored special events, festivals, park programs, and community gatherings by creating safe, welcoming, and engaging recreation spaces. Staff actively engage with participants, assist with event operations, and ensure all equipment and activities are used safely and appropriately. Let’s Play Mobile Recreation brings play-based activities, games, and interactive experiences to a wide range of locations and events across the City of Evanston.
Job Summary The specific assignment will include some or all of the following:
Set up and break down event spaces, including tents, tables, chairs, signage, Let’s Play games, recreation equipment, and other special event materials.
Assist with the layout and organization of event sites according to event maps, diagrams, and safety plans.
Load, unload, and organize supplies and equipment within the Let’s Play trailer and City vehicles.
Lead and facilitate game play and recreational activities during special events, ensuring inclusive and safe participation for all ages.
Monitor participant use of equipment to ensure proper and safe operation.
Inspect event sites, recreation areas, and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and functionality; report concerns and recommend maintenance or repairs as needed.
Drive City vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, and materials to and from event sites.
Follow established event timelines, setup/breakdown procedures, and location-specific instructions.
Provide excellent customer service to community members, event partners, vendors, and City staff.
Assist Special Events staff with on-site event operations as needed, including crowd flow support and general event assistance.
Complete and submit all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, injury reports, daily logs, and event documentation.
Submit 311 service requests for identified repairs or maintenance issues.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in recreation or sports, safe operation of vehicles, and general public clean-up
Ability to read, understand, and apply instructions for the safe operation of equipment and available tools
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public and employees
Ability to read, understand, interpret, and locate addresses within the City of Evanston boundaries illustrated on a map
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, such as cold, high winds, rain, high temperatures, and humidity
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, lift a minimum of 50 lbs., kneel, bend, stand, or sit for long periods, and identify or distinguish colors
Ability to work in environments with loud noises, vibrations, fumes, dust, and dirt
Ability to climb a ladder
Supervision Work is assigned through the Special Event Coordinator. Assignments may vary from day to day. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communication, meetings, and feedback from supervisors and other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and OSHA. Work is evaluated at least once per season for safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with the classification standard.
Public Contact The employee has regular and frequent contact with division and department employees, City staff, community residents and representatives, and members of the public and representatives of other agencies, including elected officials.
Rate $17 per hour
Schedule This is a part-time, seasonal position. Staff are scheduled for about 10-20 hours per week. Schedule includes weekends and may include holidays. Total hours for this position not to exceed 1000 hours in the calendar year.
