Summary Lead MST works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work.

Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work

Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable

Certification: None

English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3 - section A - paragraph 3j - this part

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)

Grade Determinations: GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level

Experience may include knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings - knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination - working knowledge of medical terminology - anatomy and physiology - microbiology - medical conditions and procedures - knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation - and ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures

Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments

Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives - rules and regulations

Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees - team leaders - and managers

Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures

Ability to lead individuals - manage priorities - and schedule work assignments

Preferred Experience: Knowledge of universal precautions and infection prevention

Preferred Experience: Basic knowledge of medical terminology

Preferred Experience: Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment

Preferred Experience: Knowledgeable of Instrument Tracking Systems (ITS)

Preferred Experience: History of leadership experience in any clinical role

Physical Requirements: The position will require heavy lifting (45 pounds and over) - heavy carrying (45 pounds and over) - pulling hand over hand - walking (8 hours) - standing (8 hours) - and repeated bending.

Duties

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This is a position in Sterile Processing Service as a Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing Technician)

In this position the incumbent will provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center

The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation (scissors - forceps - retractors - etc.) - surgical trays and sets and various other items that could be processed or assembled through the Preparation and Decontamination areas of Sterile Processing Service

This position requires administrative duties to include conducting quality assurance audits - maintaining sterilization records - completing dashboard data - providing educational in-services - and serving as a resource to other Medical Supply Technicians

Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position

The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning - disinfection - sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position

The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave - 13 days of sick leave - 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual - based on prior work experience or military service experience
