Summary The Lead Medical Supply Technician works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Responsibilities include distributing and prioritizing workload, ensuring even workflow distribution, revising work schedules, assigning work based on experience and training needs, monitoring and reporting on the status of work.

Re‑vise work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes.
Assign work to staff based on experience and training needs.
Monitor and report on the status of work.
Duties
Provide sterilization, preparation, supply item and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the medical center.
Process disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation (scissors, forceps, retractors, etc.), surgical trays and sets, and other items that may be processed or assembled through the Preparation and Decontamination areas of Sterile Processing Service.
Conduct quality assurance audits, maintain sterilization records, complete dashboard data, provide educational in‑services, and serve as a resource to other Medical Supply Technicians.
Maintain knowledge of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME.
Utilize acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm.
Qualifications Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work, or one year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health‑care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, operating room and surgical technician courses, or other courses related to the position.
Equivalent combination of experience and education qualifies for entry level.
English language proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.
May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees who meet the criteria.
Grade Determinations: GS‑07 – one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Experience may include knowledge of surgical instruments, universal precautions, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures, sterility principles, and ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Instruct staff on correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Communicate with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
Maintain interpersonal relationships with employees, team leaders and managers.
Knowledge of sterility principles to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
Lead individuals, manage priorities and schedule work assignments.
Preferred Experience
Knowledge of universal precautions and infection prevention.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
Knowledgeable about Instrument Tracking Systems (ITS).
History of leadership experience in any clinical role.
Physical Requirements The position requires heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), heavy carrying (45 pounds and over), pulling hand over hand, walking (8 hours), standing (8 hours), and repeated bending.
