About the College Northumberland College is Ofsted Outstanding and is currently building a multi-million, state of the art, new college campus in Ashington, due to open in 2026. The successful candidate will be based at the new college where a purpose-built construction, housing, advanced manufacturing and engineering centre will be located.

Curriculum spans technical, vocational further and higher education and includes large apprenticeship provision and dedicated centres for young people with SEND.

The College has two main campuses in Ashington, and Ponteland, and as part of the college group Education Partnership Northeast, it also has a significant number of satellite delivery centres across the region

The successful candidate will have strong technical expertise in a variety of engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, fabrication, or welding, and will be responsible for the setup, maintenance, and operation of workshop equipment and machinery. You will play an active role in supporting teaching staff by preparing materials, providing technical assistance during lessons, and guiding students through practical tasks. Additionally, you will be involved in ensuring that Health & Safety regulations are adhered to at all times, including the completion of risk assessments and the maintenance of a safe learning environment.

Whether you come from an industry background or have previous experience in an educational setting, your practical skills, attention to detail, and passion for engineering will shine through.

About the Role We are seeking to appoint a suitably experienced Engineering Instructor/Technician to join our team and contribute to the success of the Engineering provision at our Ashington Campus. This role is crucial in supporting both the practical delivery and the day-to-day operation of our engineering workshops, helping ensure that students gain hands‑on experience in a safe and dynamic environment.

Role Responsibilities

Deliver practical skills and demonstrations in the engineering workshop to enhance student learning.

Prepare materials and teaching aids for practical and theory sessions.

Maintain and service tools, equipment, and machinery in compliance with Health & Safety regulations.

Support lecturers by providing technical assistance and resources for lessons.

Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe working practices across all engineering areas.

Manage stock levels, maintain accurate records, and assist with ordering materials within budget.

Promote a safe, clean, and effective working environment for students and staff

Qualifications

Level 3 vocational qualification in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).

Minimum Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy (or willingness to work towards).

Health & Safety awareness and COSHH knowledge.

Experience working in a machine shop or engineering environment.

Competence in bench fitting, lathe turning, and milling machine practices.

Ability to provide operational and technical support for students.

Strong understanding of safe working practices and risk assessment procedures.

Excellent organisational and communication skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
