Overview The auto mechanic will maintain school buses and other automotive vehicles to provide safe transportation and working conditions for students and employees.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance including: oil change, lube, checking fluids, and tire pressure.

Assist in performing engine tune-ups.

Change, repair, and mount tires.

Assist in routine brake jobs.

Assist in repairing air conditioning and electrical problems.

Assist in repairing mechanical breakdowns or malfunctions for carburetors, clutches, water pumps, starters, generators, and other general motor repairs and overhauls.

Replace windows in buses and trucks (not including windshields).

Repair bus wheelchair lifts.

Perform emission inspections.

Order and stock equipment including belts, oil filters, air filters, etc.

Pick-up parts.

Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.

Maintain a clean, neat, and safe work environment.

Cover bus routes during driver shortages.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent. Specialized training or trade school in automotive, truck, and school bus maintenance and repair.

Licenses or Certifications Arizona Class B CDL Arizona Driver's license and School Bus Drivers’ certificate with good driving record, preferred.

Experience One to three years of experience in maintenance and repair, including engine overhaul, vehicle electrical systems, carburetor work, and brake overhaul for hydraulic and air brakes.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Knowledge and ability to comply with safety procedures.

Knowledge and ability to assist in performing engine tune-ups.

Knowledge and ability to change, repair, and mount tires.

Knowledge and ability to assist in routine brake jobs.

Knowledge and ability to assist in repairing air conditioning and electrical problems.

Ability to assist in repairing carburetors, clutches, water pumps, starters, and generators.

Ability to replace windows in buses and trucks (not including windshields).

Ability to change oil, lube, and check fluids and tire pressure.

Ability to lift 100 pounds, bend, crawl under equipment, climb, push 130 pounds, reach, carry 50 pounds, and have manual dexterity.

A command of English is necessary to read and interpret routine information such as work schedules, memos, and instructions for tools and equipment and to communicate with co-workers.

Working Conditions The working environment may include working outdoors and in shop/garage structures where fumes, vapors, grease, oil, noise and dust are prevalent.

Terms of Employment Twelve-month year, salary Level H, employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.

Evaluation Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.

Salary Classified Hourly Salary Schedule. Level H | Entry Level: $20.25/hr
