Position Hours And Pay This position is for 7 hours per day for 4 days in the first year and 2 days each year thereafter until certification is completed.

Full‑time configuration: 3.5 hours per day, 178 days per year.

Pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76 per hour.

Required Training

Complete Right Response Training within 3‑5 months of hire.

Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Paraeducator Certificate of the state‑mandated Paraeducator Certificate Program per State requirements. The program is dependent upon State funding.

Federal Minimum Employment Requirements

Must be 18 years of age.

Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.

And one of the following:

Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.

AA degree or higher.

Earned seventy‑two (72) quarter credits or forty‑eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education.

Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.

Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program.

Description This position’s responsibilities are to assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for non‑mainstreamed special education students, generally in a self‑contained classroom. Duties include instructing students individually or in small groups, assisting with basic life skills, and supervising student behavior activities.

Job Summary ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Duties

Instructs moderately to severely handicapped students individually or in small groups to promote understanding of materials. Provides encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of educational objectives defined by certificated staff.

Communicates with certificated staff concerning student progress; adjusts methods to meet needs and consults on remediation or enrichment activities.

Assists certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments, and other assessment records.

Attends to students’ physical and safety needs; monitors for medical risks such as seizures and harmful behaviors.

Assists students with toileting, personal hygiene, and basic living skills; helps with feeding and social aspects of eating.

Assists students with interpersonal and personal skill mastery; helps integrate students with age‑group peers.

Establishes and maintains effective communication with students, staff, and parents for student progress and safety.

Provides physical assistance to students, including lifting or positioning. Uses adaptive equipment and follows documentation procedures established by physical therapists.

Monitors need for first aid and refers for treatment as appropriate.

Maintains cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and implements; washes dishes, cleans equipment, and manages laundry for students.

Other Functions

Alerts qualified district staff to student problems.

Locates, prepares, and/or modifies materials for student use, enrichment activities, and special projects under direction of certificated staff.

Prepares, duplicates, collates, and distributes materials; operates a variety of office equipment.

Maintains physical appearance of classroom and other assigned areas; stores equipment and supplies.

MAY serve on district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, protecting confidentiality per district ethical guidelines.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Reporting Relationships Reports to the school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff.

Mental Demands May experience frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors, academic abilities, physical or emotional disabilities, and occasionally distraught or difficult students.

Physical Demands Potential exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; exposure to student noise; required to lift and position students and equipment such as wheelchairs; required to work in non‑routine positions for extended periods; may attend to student personal hygiene; may be exposed to biting behavior; playground supervision may require working outdoors in inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment. Experience working with school‑age children and special‑needs students preferred. For Title One and Title One School‑wide Special Education positions, an associate degree, proof of completion of the Washington State Paraeducator Assessment, or two years of higher education per the Federal "No Child Left Behind" Act is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Demonstrated skill in reading, writing, and communication. Knowledge of basic subject areas, such as reading and math. Ability to work warmly and confidently with students; remain flexible to changes in assignments; organize activities; follow and give instructions; be fair and consistent; implement effective behavior management and instructional techniques; knowledge of behavior and learning disorders; knowledge of student safety rules and procedures; ability to use computers and software for instruction and record keeping; operation of general office machines; establish and maintain effective relationships with students and staff; diffuse situations and resolve conflicts; confidentiality; willingness to be trained in medical procedures such as medication administration and tube feeding.

Licenses/Special Requirements Requires fingerprinting and background check for any convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certification. Hepatitis‑B immunization is offered. Must complete Right Response Training and receive qualifications within the first 3‑5 months of hire. Renewal of Right Response certification must be completed annually before expiration date.
