Sr Polysomnographic Technologist

Houston Methodist . This full‑time night shift position requires an experienced technologist who will work under the general supervision of a clinical or medical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders.

Responsibilities

Perform, score, and report sleep studies, including advanced and complex procedures such as Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, pulmonary artery pressure measurements, and oxygen titration.

Prepare preliminary reports for physician interpretation and complete final reports once signed off.

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures, including home sleep studies, while ensuring data integrity and artifact‑free signal acquisition.

Educate patients on study procedures, obtain consent, and adapt teaching methods to individual needs.

Coordinate activities within the polysomnography department, assist in the implementation of new equipment or software, and serve as a resource for department‑related needs.

Troubleshoot, calibrate, and conduct preventive maintenance on all equipment per departmental guidelines.

Participate in quality‑improvement initiatives, and contribute to department and hospital targets for quality and safety.

Qualifications

Education : Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s).

Experience : Three years as a Polysomnographic Technologist in a sleep disorders laboratory or center.

Licenses and Certifications – Required :

BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

RPSGT – Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT) or RRT‑SDS – Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorder Specialty (NBRC)

Skills and Abilities

Demonstrates core competencies through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.

Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language, especially regarding patient and employee safety.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, families, and co‑workers, applying a customer‑service focus.

Competent computer knowledge; operates hospital/sleep study information systems and office software.

Works independently and handles challenging procedures and patient care situations.

Exhibits sound judgment and above‑average clinical skills.

Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with all levels of the healthcare team.

Service Essential Functions

Serve as the primary person for all sleep study procedures, including MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, and oxygen titration.

Perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.

Educate patients and manage consent processes.

Coordinate department activities and provide resources for equipment/software implementation.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

Acquire polysomnographic data with artifact‑free monitoring and document baseline values, sleep stages, and clinical events.

Troubleshoot equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and report malfunctions.

Score sleep studies in accordance with AASM guidelines and prepare detailed reports.

Implement safety initiatives, report near‑misses, and recommend process improvements.

Document patient care and polysomnography activities accurately; enter charges at the time of service.

Manage inventory levels and use resources efficiently.
