Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic applicant to serve as Assistant Museum Store Supervisor (Visitor Services Assistant 2) within the New York State Museum. Reporting to the Director of Retail Operations (Museum Support Services Specialist 2), the successful candidate will assist in the reopening and ongoing management of the Museum’s Gift Store, playing a vital role in enhancing the visitor experience and supporting the Museum’s educational mission.
Duties
Assist the Director of Retail Operations in overseeing store operations; serve as the store lead in the absence of the Director of Retail Operations
Lead visual merchandising strategies for the store and uphold cleanliness standards
Assist in training and scheduling employees. Provide guidance and support to ensure cashier staff perform their duties effectively and maintain high service standards.
Address customer complaints and inquiries, ensuring a positive shopping experience. Strive to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Manage inventory levels on the floor, ensuring the store is adequately stocked. Coordinate with suppliers regarding deliveries and maintain accurate inventory records on ingoing and outgoing product.
Process new inventory by entering data into the POS system, creating price tags, and organizing products for sale.
Support the Director of Retail Operations in achieving sales targets. Support and advance store promotions and marketing in person and online.
Ensure compliance with store policies and procedures and maintain established financial controls.
Assist in preparing reports on sales performance, inventory levels, and store foot traffic.
Operate POS (Point of Sale) and computer inventory systems effectively.
Provide cashier and frontline service coverage as needed to ensure seamless operations.
Ensure the store is secured at closing by checking if the doors are locked, alarms are set, and any safes are locked.
Minimum Qualifications Promotion: one year of experience as a Visitor Services Assistant 1.
Non‑competitive: Three years of experience in the visitor/customer service environment in a cultural institution, including one year as a supervisor.
Substitution: College study may be substituted for up to two years of general experience on the basis of 30 semester credit hours being equal to one year.

Basic math and cash handling skills
Attention to detail
Problem‑solving mindset with the ability to make quick decisions
Familiarity with retail management software (e.g., POS systems)
Ability to work in a fast‑paced, customer‑focused environment
2+ years of experience in retail or customer service
Prior experience in a supervisory or assistant manager role preferred
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non‑competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of experience and/or transcripts will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. The work schedule for this position will be Wednesday – Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This position may require occasional off‑shift night and weekend work. This position will require 5 % in‑state/Statewide travel.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $61,548 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
