Food Services Assistant – Houston Methodist
Work at Houston Methodist West Hospital as a Food Services Assistant (FSA). The FSA performs kitchen, tray‑line, and retail duties such as tray assembly, food preparation, serving, and cart transport.
FLSA Status Non‑exempt
Education
High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post‑secondary education, etc.) – preferred.
Experience
Experience in a food service environment or large service establishment – preferred.
License & Certifications
Food Handlers Permit – approved by TXDSHS or ANSI.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing assessments and performance evaluations.
Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety or security.
Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members and co‑workers, maintaining a customer‑service focus and positive language.
Working knowledge of Serve Safe guidelines and Health Department standards.
Knowledge of food service equipment and sanitation principles.
Active listening skills, giving full attention to others.
Knowledge of kitchen equipment.
Essential Functions People Essential Functions
Interact in a positive, professional manner with patients, visitors and staff; communicate clearly and professionally to promote teamwork and problem resolution; work with Patient Services, Catering, Retail Services and Production staff to ensure accurate and timely deliveries.
Follow through in resolving problems as they arise and provide leadership with full reports when issues are identified.
Contribute toward improvement of department scores for employee engagement (peer‑to‑peer accountability).
Service Essential Functions
Prepare and serve simple food items as directed by production sheet or menu.
Deliver trays with accuracy and efficiency to designated locations to achieve established time frames for room service or traditional service meal delivery; assist with assembling trays on the tray line as needed; work in the dish room as assigned.
Transport pantry supplies, garbage, cardboard and supplies to designated areas; maintain clean, orderly storage areas with all food items.
Retrieve soiled trays and return carts in a timely manner to appropriate location.
Perform patient tray setup and ensure all supplies are stocked for patient tray line each meal period.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Follow proper procedure in loading and transporting food delivery carts to prevent spillage and delay of meal delivery; accurately maintain food cart delivery log.
Ensure food served is presented attractively and held at the proper temperature; follow all relevant local Food Ordinances, including labeling and dating food properly to ensure freshness, properly rotating food items, and discarding food past expiration dates; ensure the service area is clean and sanitized.
Follow the menu, paying close attention to details; review menus in advance to ensure supplies are in‑house; utilize downtime for preparation of setups to ensure menus are ready at the specified time.
Finance Essential Functions
Minimize food waste through portion control and ensure proper use and storage of food, supplies and equipment to reduce departmental cost and expenses.
Utilize resources with cost‑effectiveness and value creation in mind; self‑motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Generate and communicate new ideas and suggestions that will improve quality or service.
Seek opportunities to identify self‑development needs and take appropriate action; ensure own career discussions occur with appropriate management; complete and update the My Development Plan (MDP) on an ongoing basis.
