The Patient Business Services (PBS) provides MD Anderson Cancer Center, its patients and physicians with professional, accurate, efficient, responsive and compassionate patient accounting services. PBS will assure that fees for services are accurately reimbursed and that all governing billing and collection regulations are closely followed. PBS aims to create a supportive and integrated environment for patients, clinicians and employees throughout the revenue cycle.

SUMMARY The PBS Billing Specialist provides professional expertise in daily governmental billing and follow‑up processes for technical charges. The primary purpose of the PBS Billing Specialist position is to bill and follow‑up on Medicare claims within regulatory guidelines. The PBS Billing Specialist must ensure that all claims are filed according to timely filing limits and that all follow‑up activities are performed timely and accurately.

The ideal candidate will have five years of progressively responsible billing experience with three years in governmental hospital billing. This position is located in the Texas Medical Center and is Hybrid Onsite/Remote. The work schedule will be Monday – Friday 7AM – 4PM or 8AM – 5PM.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

UB‑04 Knowledge

Maintain working knowledge of UB‑04, including modifier logic, HCPCS/CPT codes, and revenue line code descriptions.

Claims Processing

Complete claims in daily billing work queues and process daily responses/rejections.

Correct Medicare RTP Billing rejections online via Medicare FSS terminal.

Complete claims accurately for patients on CMS Qualified Clinical Trials.

Denials & Appeals

Work governmental denials and process appeals.

Perform follow‑up activity on governmental accounts, including Aged Trial Balance Report, work queues, and Denials Report.

Analyze accounts by reviewing system comments and billing activities.

Compliance & Updates

Stay abreast of all Payor Bulletins and Provider Updates on an ongoing basis.

Ensure all late and unbilled charges are accounted for and resolved.

Communication

Communicate with various revenue departments to validate claim discrepancies.

Communicate with fiscal intermediary/MAC on claims issues.

Notify management immediately of all rejections or problems causing delays in payment or resolution.

Notify management of any edits or claim corrections needed to expedite payment.

Documentation & Quality Assurance

Document clear, concise, and complete collection notes in the system for each account worked.

Assure accounts are worked at a high level of quality and completeness by proofreading and monitoring work output.

Perform system analysis as needed.

EDUCATION

Required: Associate’s Degree or

Required: Equivalent college credit.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: 5 years progressively responsible billing experience with three years in governmental hospital billing.

May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
