Parks Maintenance Worker

Position Overview Under the direction of the Parks Supervisor and Lead Maintenance Specialist, you will perform a broad range of routine maintenance, light construction, and repair tasks across Park & landscape areas. Venue work includes

landscaping, trimming, mowing, painting, traffic‑control, equipment operation, and customer service .

Responsibilities

Perform routine park maintenance functions; clean and maintain grounds, athletic fields, skate parks, walkways, and stairways; remove trash and litter.

Execute mowing, edging, string‑trimming, leaf blowing, shrub trimming, and leaf raking duties.

Maintain park facilities such as restrooms, replace or repair playground equipment, benches, tables, and monuments.

Operate and maintain riding mowers, tractors, rototillers, sprayers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, string trimmers, chippers, and other landscaping equipment.

Use hand and small power tools—including push mower, shovels, rakes, chainsaws—in support of park maintenance.

Carry out mowing, watering, weeding, irrigation installation, and pesticide application for turf and landscaped areas.

Assist in planting, trimming, and removal of city‑owned trees.

Set up traffic‑control devices and perform flagging in work zones while adhering to safety guidelines.

Conduct routine inspection and maintenance of equipment and report problems to Fleet Services.

Coordinate with other departments and agencies to implement work programs.

Interact with the public to respond to questions, provide safety guidance, and resolve conflicts.

Maintain accurate logs and records of work performed.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

Operate and maintain equipment for landscape and facility maintenance.

Perform routine safety checks and fluid servicing for efficient equipment operation.

Coordinate repairs with Fleet Services personnel.

Department Organization & Public Interaction

Communicate with department employees, other agencies, and the public for efficient work program coordination.

Respond to public inquiries regarding city programs, facilities, and schedules.

Provide direction on safety and handle user conflict situations.

Customer Service Standards & Communication

Greet customers with a smile and positive tone; gather information; handle issues directly whenever possible.

Seek answers first; if not, provide contact info for assistance.

Listen, understand, and clarify to meet customer needs; keep tone positive and enthusiastic.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

One year of experience or vocational training in landscape construction or maintenance, or equivalent training.

Valid driver’s license, flagging certificate, cave‑in protection/competent person/confined space, CPR/first aid and AED certification (all must be obtained within six months of hire).

Required Certifications/Licenses Driver’s License, Flagging Certificate, Cave‑In Protection/Competent Person/Confined Space, CPR/First Aid and AED Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Basic construction and repair in parks and landscapes.

Maintenance principles for playgrounds, athletic fields, irrigation, street trees, and other facilities.

Operation and minor maintenance of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment.

Traffic‑control procedures and signage regulations.

Federal, state, local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to parks.

Safety equipment and practices; safe driving rules.

Record‑keeping principles and basic software for the position.

Customer‑service techniques, independent judgment, and teamwork.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work is primarily outdoors in all weather. Tasks may involve heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and traffic zones. Physical requirements include strength, stamina, mobility, ability to lift up to 75 lbs, use of hand tools and power equipment, and vision and hearing for communication.
