School Crossing Guard

Location and Department City of Gainesville – GG_Police: Police Specialty Units
Salary Minimum: $15.00 per hour; Maximum: $25.00 per hour
Employment Type Part-time (less than 30 hours per week) seasonal – while schools are in session
Closing Date January 20, 2026
Job Responsibilities
Place school sentinel signs in roadways at designated points near school crossings and remove them at end of duty.
Control vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely.
Control children using crossing to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Report to immediate supervisor those children who fail to cooperate.
Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
Additional Duties Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
High school graduation or equivalent diploma; preferred.
Some experience with children and/or road safety, or equivalent training and experience providing required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certificates
Complete Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission’s (CJSTC) approved 8‑hour Traffic Control Procedures program within one year of appointment.
Complete Federal Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) 8‑hour School Crossing Guard certification within one year of appointment.
Notes
Work requires performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
Work requires performing tasks in and around heavy traffic.
Selection Factors
Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
Ability to stand for periods of two to three hours or react rapidly to unexpected events while maintaining exemplary public image.
Ability to work with and enlist the cooperation of children.
