Library Technician-Casual
Waukesha County Technical College, Pewaukee, Wisconsin, United States
Perform technical and procedural duties in the cataloging, circulation, acquisition, and/or reference areas of the library. Work involved is of a responsible, technical nature, requiring some knowledge of library systems, procedures and references and the use of online information systems. The position works independently and exercises some judgment and initiative. Occasionally assist patrons with informational needs and interpret library policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of the job. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated on this description.
Perform circulation duties such as checking materials in and out, processing renewals and overdue notices, managing library accounts, issuing community library cards, and assisting patrons in finding and using materials or equipment.
Refer reference inquiries to the Research Help Desk
Assist with technical acquisition duties associated with the ordering, receiving and processing of books and other library materials.
Assist in maintaining the reserve collection.
Participate in the inventory process of the Library collection.
Prepare and maintain library records and files.
Explain library policies and usage to patrons.
Perform routine clerical duties such as filing and preparing correspondence.
Support College managers in quality and process improvement activities.
Maintain current professional/ technical knowledge through professional education and activities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of library classification systems and practices, preferably the Library of Congress system.
Familiarity with the cataloging, acquisition, circulation and reference areas of a library.
Familiarity with an Integrated Library System (ILS).
Effective interpersonal communication skills - oral, written and listening
Strong customer service skills, working with individuals from diverse backgrounds to present technical information to students, instructors, staff, and the public.
Data entry skills
Ability to manage time and organize work
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Familiarity with computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets and/or databases
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of formal education beyond high school with course work in Library Science or related field.
One year of recent library experience, preferably at the technical/paraprofessional level
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION This position supports the Library department, and is available to start on before January 30th. This is a casual position (20 hours/week) with flexible start times. Benefits are not included.
