Equipment Operator I – Signs & Markings and Street Sweeper The Colorado Springs Public Works division is ready to welcome multiple Equipment Operator I's to their dynamic team! As an Equipment Operator you will perform semi‑skilled maintenance tasks for the City’s Public Works Department.

Available Teams & Key Duties

Street Sweeper Team

– Operate street sweeping equipment to keep roads clean, improve safety, and prevent pollutants from entering the stormwater system. Duties include routine sweeping and debris removal.

Signs & Markings Team

– Construct, install, and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings. Operate specialized equipment, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with city traffic safety standards.

Anticipated Schedule 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Either Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday depending on crew assignment after hire.

Job Type Full‑time; non‑exempt

Hiring Range $21.78 – $26.14

Signs & Markings Team Responsibilities

Installsigns and markings, using various equipment and hand tools, in compliance with federal standards

Use Cartegraph to review work orders

Coordinate with supervisors, traffic technicians, and other departments to support signs and markings needs

Transport materials and equipment to and from maintenance and construction sites

Perform preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment

Apply chemicals, abrasives, and other ice control products

Snow and Ice Control Operations along with other emergency response as needed for different events (Snow, rain, hail, wind, fire, etc.)

Maintain log and record books

Perform manual labor such as cleaning culverts, mowing, patching potholes, and shoveling asphalt

Street Sweeper Team Responsibilities

Operate equipment such as a sweeper, front end loader, Tandem axle dump truck, utility truck with trailer, hand and power tools

Operate a single/tandem axle dump truck with plow and sander during snow removal operations

Transport material and equipment to and from maintenance and construction sites

Safely use, clean, service, and make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment and tools

Perform manual labor such as raking/shoveling dirt and asphalt, removing debris, and shoveling snow

Safely operate hand and power tools and construction and maintenance equipment

Perform grounds maintenance and clean up

Assist other divisions within the Public Works departments as business needs permit

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate Knowledge of

Pertinent federal, state, and local guidelines and standards

The basic operation and maintenance requirements of power‑driven equipment

Practices, methods, and materials used in general construction

Occupational hazards and standard safety practices

Ability to

Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods

Safely operate a variety of equipment and hand tools

Safely operate assigned vehicle

Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing

Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED

One year of professional, full‑time experience in concrete labor, general construction, manual labor or another relevant field

Possess and maintain a valid, non‑probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions

Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non‑probationary Colorado CDL Class B driver’s license which is not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges

CDL Registration Requirement To be considered for this position you must register your CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov

Physical Demands The position requires the ability to pull, reach, bend, climb, kneel, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently, and use fingers, hands, and legs; distinguish colors, and safely operate assigned vehicle and equipment.
