Job Description Erie 1 BOCES seeks Personal Teacher Aide for openings at our Winchester Academy. Kind and caring individuals are encouraged to apply. This position requires working with students with disabilities one on one under the direction of the classroom teacher. Applicants should have a positive outlook, a strong work ethic and be compassionate.

Responsibilities

Assists with classroom activities as directed by teacher

Works with individual children as directed by teacher

Assists children with arrival and departure involving coats, boots, and lunches

Helps keep supplies and materials in order

Helps prepare materials for their use

Cleans up and puts away materials after use

Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary

Assists teacher in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program

Accompanies a child when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building

Assists in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others

Assists and supervises games and free play, both indoors and outdoors

Assists teacher in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living (e.g., grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.)

Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities

Teacher Aide Lifting Requirements

Teacher Aides working with non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40-pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices

Ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students. Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability. Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices

Qualifications Be an active part of the classroom education team as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes. Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding. Maintains confidentiality of student information.

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or;

B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role; or;

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
