Job Summary Under supervision of the Deputy Director of Communications performs responsible work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of radios and related equipment, electrical, and electronic equipment to the component level.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for installing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining all radios and related equipment in all City vehicles including, but not limited to, Department of Public Safety (Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services) cars, vans, and trucks.

Responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of sirens and various special lighting systems and devices in all Public Safety vehicles including, but not limited to, Police, Fire, and Fire Apparatus.

Installs, repairs, and maintains electronic equipment, video equipment, in-car laptop computers, and electrical gun racks for all Police vehicles.

Installs, repairs, and maintains flashlights and chargers for Fire Department vehicles and apparatus.

Installs, repairs, and maintains cell phone “hands-free kits”.

Assists the Radio Engineer, Line and Cable Crews, and the Telephone Technician as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent with additional training from a technical or trade school in automotive or electronics.

Five (5) years experience in electronics and electrical installations, maintenance repairs, and trouble shooting.

Must be able to meet any and all continuing education/professional development programs to maintain proficiency.

Thorough knowledge of motor vehicles and 12-volt DC systems.

Basic knowledge of testing processes and procedures for electronic and electrical equipment.

Must be able to operate a voltage/amp meter.

Knowledge of and skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of all applicable devices.

Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Training Requirements

Must obtain a State of Rhode Island Telecommunications Systems Technician License within twelve (12) months of appointment.
