Primary Responsibility Ensuring the safety of patrons is the lifeguard's primary responsibility.

Secondary Responsibilities Additional responsibilities that each Tupelo Parks & Recreation lifeguard must uphold are:

Promote the Aquatic Program as part of the Tupelo Parks & Recreation Department and serve as an ambassador for the Department and its mission.

Assist in tasks that are not limited to lifeguarding, supporting the diversity of programs; complete these tasks positively and efficiently.

Job Requirements Certifications Maintain current certification and proficiency:

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Today (Valid 2 years)

CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED Essentials (Valid 2 years)

Re-certification classes are offered as needed; if not attended, you are responsible for updating certification to remain eligible.

Safety Accident prevention is achieved through knowledge, understanding, and assertive enforcement of all rules, policies, and procedures. Taking action before an incident can eliminate potential problems. If an accident does arise, proper rescues/first aid and reports must be completed to the highest standard.

Public Relations Communicate between lifeguards, patrons, and other staff in a calm, polite, and rational manner. Educate patrons on rules and policies, be assertive, ask questions, and offer assistance.

Fitness Standards Lifeguards are expected to maintain a fitness level that allows for efficient and effective water rescues and supports skill performance. Failure to complete required standards may result in suspension or termination.

300 yd swim – deck start not permitted; front crawl and breaststroke.

25 yd sprint with rescue tube – stride jump required.

25 yd sprint retrieve 10 lb brick – stride jump required, appropriate rescue technique.

25 yd return to start with rescue tube and brick – whirl/rotary kick on back.

310 water with 10 lb brick for 1 :30 – both hands on brick, out of water.

Quick surface dive for 10 lb brick in 12’4” of water – approach stroke for minimum 10 yards, then diving (goggles not permitted).
