Base Pay Range $63,361.00/yr – $80,655.00/yr

Description Under the supervision of a hearing officer, a Legal Assistant II performs a variety of paralegal activities including compiling and organizing files and documentation; preparing legal documents and forms; cataloging information; updating databases or spreadsheets; and preparing correspondence and affidavits. The role requires independent handling of complex paralegal work such as legal research in areas without clear precedent and analyzing information with minimal direction from attorneys.

Duties (Overview)

Draft reports and recommendations, orders, and notices of filings and other decision‑related papers.

Draft affidavits of service, continuances, and notice of adjournments and rescheduled hearings.

Review freedom of information records and requests to ensure compliance with the Public Officers Law and to prepare drafts of determinations.

Draft legislation changes, manage bill tracking activities, and prepare various legal documents for administrative proceedings.

Review and receive electronic discovery forms, restyle papers, organize exhibits, and assist with trial preparation.

Assist the hearing officer in managing scheduled events.

Minimum Qualifications

At least three years of full‑time experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant.

Understanding of legal procedures and ability to prepare and interpret legal documents, conduct research, and handle routine procedural problems independently.

Associate degree (or higher) in paralegal/legal‑assistant/legal studies, or a certificate from a regionally accredited college/university or an ABA‑approved program, combined with required experience.

For those with a degree in another field, requirement of two years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant unless a law degree is held.

Current NYS civil‑service eligibility or a qualifying NY‑HELPS appointment as described in the program.

Additional Comments Position may involve occasional evenings or out‑stationed assignments. Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview.
