Biological Support Member – Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex Summary:

American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), is seeking 1 member to contribute to biological monitoring projects under the mentorship of FWS staff. Major duties will include supporting the inventory and monitoring efforts of multiple national wildlife refuges in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The member will travel across a variety of habitat types, providing technical support for the full survey lifecycle of inventory and monitoring of refuge priorities on National Wildlife Refuges of the Southeast.

Position Overview Mission: Work under FWS guidance to support conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continued benefit of the American people.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with scientific staff in the Inventory and Monitoring program of the Southeast region on refuge-priority surveys.

Generate, archive, and synthesize raw wildlife and habitat survey data:

Conduct surveys for avian, terrestrial, and aquatic species.

Identify wildlife and plants to species.

Collect target measurements (e.g., counts, size, density).

Data entry, management and build data visualizations and summaries.

Document survey procedures and outcomes in scientific writing formats.

Work with data managers and other I&M staff to ensure appropriate data management and archiving.

Update refuge-specific parameters into national databases.

Other duties may include:

Assist with wildlife and habitat management and research on refuges.

Interact with various FWS programs and explore career opportunities within the USFWS and National Wildlife Refuge System.

Benefits

Living Allowance:

$700/week, dispersed bi‑weekly to offset food and incidental expenses.

Housing:

Provided at no cost for the duration of the term.

Gear Reimbursement:

Up to $200 for eligible gear purchases, approved by ACE staff.

Training & Orientation:

Position‑specific training, including use of standard equipment, site‑specific sampling procedures, online GIS and database management trainings, and biological program database use.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:

Members may earn federal hiring authority upon completion of 640 hours of service.

Qualifications

Required:

U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.

Professional representation of ACE and partner organization.

Self‑directed, works well alone and in a team.

Valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.

Willing to undergo a two‑part criminal history check.

Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Completion of bi‑weekly timesheets, term feedback forms, end‑term evaluations, and mid‑term evaluations (for longer terms).

Compliance with the Member Service Agreement.

Effective communication skills to follow directions.

Strong task completion and time‑management skills.

Experience working independently in remote areas.

Organizational and data‑management skills for accurate data entry, QA/QC, and reporting.

Preferred:

Degree in natural resources, biology, ecology, entomology, or related fields.

Experience in scientific literature reviews and information synthesis.

Experience following written instructions for sampling SOPs.

Skill in documenting, entering, and managing data using Microsoft and ArcGIS.

Experience with electronic field data collection, curation, and archiving.

Experience with wetland and/or forest plant identification.

Interest in avian and terrestrial wildlife and habitats.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, and use of hands; stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, crouching; hiking through dense vegetation; handling insects or other hazards.

Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception; ability to focus.

Weight lifted: frequently up to 35 lbs., up to 50 lbs. possible.

Environment: outdoor and indoor, weather can vary; hot and humid summers.

Noise: moderate business office level.

Travel: requires domestic travel.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards The ACE member(s) may encounter extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Safe and orderly conduct of duties is required.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety Vehicles and tools required for duties are provided by FWS or ACE. Personal protective equipment is mandatory where required. Strict adherence to FWS and ACE training, certification, and safety protocols is required.
