JOB DESCRIPTION The Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University invites applications for a full-time position as a Visiting Assistant Professor in music theory. This is a one-year, renewable, adjunct position to begin September 1, 2026. We seek a scholar/teacher of outstanding accomplishment or potential to contribute to the Conservatory’s tradition of excellence in training thoughtful, accomplished musicians and scholars. In particular, the successful candidate will exhibit enthusiasm for teaching a core curriculum in both tonal and non-tonal Western music theory while also demonstrating a commitment to diversifying the works studied and the theoretical approaches employed in its analysis.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in music theory by the date of appointment and must demonstrate potential for outstanding teaching. All areas of research specialization within the field of music theory are welcomed, though one that lies outside the traditional Western canon is strongly preferred. Lawrence University is committed to a close relationship between the Conservatory and the College, so strong support of the ideals and goals of a broad liberal arts education is expected. An ability to collaborate with professors across a wide variety of disciplines is highly desirable.
